Dejounte Murray’s first season with the New Orleans Pelicans came to a sudden and painful end on January 31, 2025, when the veteran guard ruptured his Achilles tendon during a loss to the Boston Celtics. The injury not only halted his campaign but also placed his basketball future into uncertainty, as Achilles injuries often require lengthy recoveries and careful rehabilitation.

For Murray, the road back required patience. Recovering from such an injury typically takes close to a year, and the Pelicans guard took a deliberate approach to ensure he could return safely and effectively. Rather than rushing the process, he focused on rehabilitation and gradually rebuilding his conditioning.

Now back on the court, Murray has begun to show encouraging signs that he is regaining his rhythm. His performances in recent games have demonstrated both confidence and productivity, suggesting that the former All-Star guard may once again become a major contributor for New Orleans.

That progress was evident Sunday night when the Pelicans defeated the Washington Wizards 138–118. Murray played a key role in the victory, continuing a string of solid outings since returning to the lineup and providing a boost for a team searching for positive momentum late in the season.

1. A Productive Return to the Court

Murray’s performance against Washington illustrated the steady progress he has made since returning from injury. Playing 24 minutes in the decisive win, he contributed 19 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals, impacting the game on both ends of the floor. The numbers reflected the type of all-around production that has defined Murray’s career. Even though he is still regaining his peak form, his ability to score, rebound, and disrupt opponents defensively has already begun to reemerge. Earlier in the week, Murray logged 30 minutes in a matchup against the Phoenix Suns, another indication that the Pelicans are comfortable increasing his workload. His minutes are gradually returning to normal levels as the team monitors his recovery. While he has not yet fully returned to the level that earned him All-Star recognition earlier in his career, the early results of his comeback have been encouraging. For a player returning from one of basketball’s most serious injuries, simply performing at this level represents a significant milestone.

2. Leadership Beyond the Numbers

Murray’s influence on the Pelicans extends beyond his statistical contributions. Teammates and observers alike have noted the leadership and determination he brings to the team, particularly after overcoming a challenging recovery process. His presence has also drawn praise from figures outside the basketball world. During Sunday’s game, former NFL safety Ryan Clark was in attendance and spoke highly of Murray’s character and leadership qualities. Clark described Murray as someone whose authenticity and commitment resonate with others around him. According to Clark, those qualities make the guard a natural source of inspiration both on and off the court. For the Pelicans, that type of leadership carries additional importance. As the team works to reestablish itself in a competitive Western Conference, players who combine talent with strong character can play a crucial role in shaping the locker room culture.

3. Looking Ahead for New Orleans

Although Murray’s return has been a positive development, the broader outlook for the Pelicans this season remains limited. With the campaign nearing its conclusion and the team no longer in playoff contention, New Orleans is focused primarily on finishing the year with professionalism and effort. Even so, there are still incentives for the Pelicans to remain competitive. By continuing to win games late in the season, they could influence the value of a draft pick connected to a previous trade involving the Atlanta Hawks. Beyond those immediate considerations, the organization is also thinking about the future. A healthy Murray could play an important role in the Pelicans’ long-term plans, particularly if he continues to regain the form that once made him one of the league’s most versatile guards. If the team can eventually return to full health, New Orleans believes it could become a more serious competitor in the Western Conference. For now, Murray’s recovery represents one of the most encouraging signs as the franchise looks toward the seasons ahead.
