The New York Jets have spent much of the past decade searching for stability. Despite numerous coaching changes, front-office restructures, and veteran acquisitions, the organization has struggled to establish a consistent winning identity.
That search continues entering the 2026 season, but the Jets are once again turning to a familiar face. Veteran linebacker Demario Davis has returned to the franchise for a third stint, bringing with him more than a decade of NFL experience and a reputation as one of the league’s most respected leaders.
Davis’ journey has come full circle. Originally selected by the Jets in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft, he spent his first four seasons in New York before returning briefly in 2017. He then enjoyed an accomplished run with the New Orleans Saints, where he developed into a five-time All-Pro and one of the NFL’s premier linebackers.
Now 37 years old, Davis believes his role extends beyond his on-field responsibilities. According to the veteran defender, the Jets brought him back to help shape the culture under owner Woody Johnson, general manager Darren Mougey, and head coach Aaron Glenn.
1. Leading Through Example
Davis made it clear that he does not view leadership as a title or designation. Instead, he believes leadership is demonstrated through daily habits and the standards a player sets for those around him.
Speaking about his return, Davis explained that the Jets are looking for more than production at linebacker. He believes the organization values the example he can provide to younger teammates as they attempt to establish a sustainable foundation.
For Davis, that means maintaining discipline in every aspect of his professional life. From workouts and film study to recovery and preparation, he sees each routine as an opportunity to reinforce what a winning culture should look like.
His comments align closely with Aaron Glenn’s emphasis on accountability and professionalism. Glenn, himself a former Jets player, has repeatedly stressed the importance of building an environment that promotes consistency both on and off the field.
2. A Veteran Still Producing
Although Davis is entering the later stages of his career, his production suggests he remains capable of contributing at a high level. Last season with the Saints, he recorded a career-best 143 combined tackles while continuing to serve as one of the defense’s most reliable players.
In addition to his tackle total, Davis registered three passes defended and two forced fumbles. His durability and consistency have become hallmarks of a career that has spanned more than a decade.
Those numbers are particularly impressive considering the physical demands of the linebacker position. Few players maintain that level of performance into their late 30s, further reinforcing Davis’ commitment to conditioning and preparation.
The Jets are undoubtedly hoping that experience translates into immediate results. While younger players may provide the long-term foundation, veterans like Davis often play a critical role in helping teams navigate the challenges of an NFL season.
3. Attempting to End a Historic Drought
Despite the optimism surrounding the franchise’s latest direction, the Jets remain confronted by a difficult reality. The team has not reached the playoffs in 15 consecutive seasons, the longest active postseason drought among teams in the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL.
Over the years, several respected veterans have arrived in New York with hopes of changing the organization’s trajectory. Many brought strong résumés and leadership qualities, yet the results on the field remained largely unchanged.
Davis understands those challenges better than most. Having experienced multiple eras of Jets football, he has witnessed firsthand the difficulties associated with building a winning culture in New York.
Still, his confidence remains unwavering. The veteran linebacker believes meaningful change begins with accountability and consistency, qualities he intends to demonstrate throughout his third tenure with the organization. Whether that ultimately translates into playoff success remains to be seen, but Davis appears committed to helping the Jets take another step toward ending one of the longest droughts in professional sports.
