The Seattle Storm are searching for answers after another difficult night extended their season-long struggles. Seattle suffered its ninth consecutive loss on Wednesday, falling 94-89 to the Portland Fire at Moda Center despite holding a lead heading into the final quarter.
The Storm appeared to have control of the game after building a seven-point advantage entering the fourth period. However, Portland responded with a decisive closing stretch, outscoring Seattle 27-15 in the final quarter to complete the comeback victory.
The defeat dropped Seattle to 3-10, leaving the team with the worst record in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, Portland improved to 8-9 after another strong performance that showcased its ability to compete in close games.
Even in the loss, one major positive stood out for Seattle. Rookie center Dominique Malonga continued her impressive development, producing a historic performance that highlighted why the franchise believes she can become a cornerstone of its future.
1. Malonga Creates WNBA History
Malonga was one of the brightest spots for the Storm on Wednesday night, leading all players with 28 points and 11 rebounds. The 20-year-old also contributed three assists, two steals, and two blocks while shooting an efficient 12-of-19 from the field. Her performance placed her in the WNBA record books. According to StatMuse, Malonga became the youngest player in league history to record at least 25 points and 10 rebounds in a single game. The milestone showed the type of impact Seattle hoped for when it selected Malonga with the No. 2 overall pick in the previous draft. The French prospect entered the league with high expectations, and she has continued to show flashes of why she was considered one of the best young talents available. Although the result against Portland was disappointing, Malonga’s ability to consistently produce at a high level gave the Storm something positive to build around during a challenging stretch.
2. Rookie Development Accelerates
Malonga’s growth has been one of the few bright points in Seattle’s season. During her rookie campaign, she originally played a reserve role and averaged 7.7 points and 4.6 rebounds in limited minutes. Her performances were strong enough to earn recognition as an All-Rookie Team selection. She became just the fifth player in franchise history to receive that honor, joining notable Storm players such as Jewell Loyd, Ramu Tokashiki, Breanna Stewart, and Jordan Horston. Her role increased significantly after starting center Ezi Magbegor suffered a foot injury that is expected to keep her sidelined for several weeks. With more responsibility, Malonga has shown she can handle a larger workload. Since moving into the starting lineup, her production has increased to 15.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.0 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game in 24.3 minutes. Her improvement has made her one of Seattle’s most important players moving forward.
3. Carrying A Changing Storm Team
The Storm entered the season facing major challenges after losing several key contributors during the offseason. The departures of Nneka Ogwumike, Skylar Diggins, and Gabby Williams created a major adjustment period for a roster searching for new leaders. With those veterans no longer in Seattle, Malonga has quickly found herself in a larger role than expected. The team is relying on her athleticism, scoring ability, and defensive presence while she continues adapting to the professional level. The transition has not been easy, as reflected by Seattle’s losing streak and struggles in close games. However, Malonga’s development provides hope that the franchise has found a player capable of helping lead its next era. The Storm will now attempt to end their difficult stretch when they face the Phoenix Mercury on Saturday. While the team needs wins, Malonga’s continued progress remains an important storyline during a challenging season.
