Alcorn State University is set to kick off a new partnership with former Green Bay Packers star Donald Driver and his company, Driven Elite, on January 20th. The initiative, part of Driven Elite’s “New Year, New Kickoff” campaign, is designed to prioritize the overall well-being of the university’s student-athletes, with a focus on both mental health and physical wellness.
The collaboration will benefit all athletic programs at Alcorn State, including both men’s and women’s teams. Driver emphasized that the initiative aims to develop leadership, mental resilience, and a strong sense of identity for student-athletes both on and off the field.
Through mentorship, mindset development, and purpose-driven programming, Driven Elite intends to help student-athletes understand how mental health impacts performance, and in turn, how performance influences life beyond sports.
Driver, a proud alumnus of Alcorn State, said he is “honored to be part of this movement,” highlighting the university as an ideal environment for these programs to grow and make a lasting impact on the student-athletes’ lives.
1. SURGE Program for Female Athletes
A central component of the partnership is the SURGE initiative, which targets the development of female student-athletes. SURGE is designed to help women athletes own their identity, cultivate purpose, and create meaningful influence in all areas of life. As part of the program, female athletes will receive new gear and access to personalized nutritional guidance to support both performance and overall health. The initiative aims to provide the tools and resources necessary for student-athletes to thrive on and off the field. Donald Driver emphasized that SURGE aligns with Driven Elite’s mission to empower young women to reach their full potential, combining practical support with mentorship and skill development. Alcorn State Athletic Director D’Wayne Robinson praised the program, noting that it reflects the university’s commitment to elevating women’s sports and ensuring female student-athletes have access to comprehensive guidance and resources.
2. Mental Health Focus for Male Athletes
Male student-athletes at Alcorn State will also see a major emphasis on mental wellness through the partnership. Driven Elite will roll out a confidential app connecting athletes with mental health professionals, providing a safe and private space for support. The initiative underscores the importance of mental resilience in athletic performance, recognizing that psychological health directly influences on-field outcomes and long-term success. Driver stressed that the program’s goal is to equip male athletes with tools to manage stress, build leadership skills, and strengthen their overall mindset in the competitive world of collegiate athletics. By combining mental health resources with mentorship and skill-building opportunities, Driven Elite aims to foster well-rounded development for all Alcorn State student-athletes, ensuring they are prepared for life beyond sports.
3. A Holistic Approach to Athlete Development
The partnership between Alcorn State and Driven Elite reflects a growing trend in collegiate athletics: prioritizing holistic development over purely performance-based metrics. Both male and female athletes will benefit from tailored programming designed to enhance mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Driver’s involvement adds credibility and inspiration, as he draws on his professional experience to mentor and guide the next generation of student-athletes. His approach emphasizes that success on the field is deeply connected to personal development and mental health. Alcorn State’s administration views the initiative as an investment in its athletes’ long-term growth, combining innovative programs with mentorship and tangible resources like gear, nutrition, and access to professionals. With SURGE and other Driven Elite initiatives, the university aims to create a culture where student-athletes feel supported, empowered, and prepared to succeed both in sports and in life beyond the campus.
