Doug Martin Parents File Wrongful Death Lawsuit Over Former NFL Star’s Passing

The parents of former NFL running back Doug Martin have initiated a wrongful death lawsuit following the death of their son in October 2025. The federal complaint alleges that actions taken by police officers and emergency medical personnel during a mental health crisis directly contributed to the former football star’s death.

Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, the lawsuit names the City of Oakland, multiple Oakland police officers, and ambulance providers Falck USA Inc. and Falck Northern California Corp. as defendants. According to the complaint, Martin’s mother initially sought emergency assistance after her son began experiencing a mental health emergency. What started as a request for medical help ultimately led to a police encounter that the family argues ended in tragedy.

1. Family Details Events Leading to Martin’s Death

According to the complaint, Leslie Martin contacted emergency services after noticing that her son was experiencing a mental health crisis. Rather than requesting a criminal investigation, the lawsuit states that the family was seeking medical assistance to help manage the situation safely. The filing alleges that Martin left the family home before officers eventually located him inside a neighboring residence. It was during this encounter that police officers attempted to restrain the former NFL player. The lawsuit claims officers held Martin face down while one or more officers applied pressure to his back during the restraint. The family argues that this method of restraint substantially contributed to his death, alleging that the force used prevented him from breathing properly. After officers eventually rolled Martin onto his side, the complaint states that he was unresponsive. The lawsuit further alleges that once emergency medical personnel arrived, they failed to provide prompt care before Martin was transported to a hospital. He was later pronounced dead, bringing a tragic end to an incident that began with a request for medical assistance. Those allegations form a central part of the family’s legal claims, as the lawsuit argues that both the police response and the subsequent emergency medical care contributed to Martin’s death rather than functioning independently of one another.

Representing the Martin family, attorney John Burris said the lawsuit is intended to uncover a complete account of the events that unfolded that day. He emphasized that the legal process should help determine precisely what happened during the encounter between Martin, law enforcement officers, and emergency responders. Burris also stated that an independent pathologist retained by the family conducted a second autopsy and has tentatively concluded that Martin died from restraint asphyxiation. That finding differs from any official determination currently available and remains subject to further review. Meanwhile, the Alameda County Coroner’s Office has not yet issued its final autopsy report. According to the lawsuit, additional testing requested by the Martin family is still pending, leaving the official cause of death undetermined while the investigation continues.
