The San Antonio Spurs delivered one of their most complete performances of the postseason Tuesday night, overwhelming the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 30-point blowout victory during Game 5 of their second-round playoff series at Frost Bank Center.
While much of the attention surrounding San Antonio has focused on franchise star Victor Wembanyama, rookie guard Dylan Harper continued to emerge as one of the team’s most important contributors. Harper played a major role off the bench and added another milestone to his already impressive postseason run.
According to reports following the game, Harper became the youngest guard in NBA history to record multiple playoff double-doubles, surpassing a mark previously held by Derrick Rose. The achievement further highlighted the rapid development of the 20-year-old rookie during San Antonio’s playoff push.
The Spurs entered the matchup expecting a physical contest against Minnesota, particularly after tensions escalated in Game 4. Instead of backing down, San Antonio responded with energy, defensive intensity, and balanced scoring that completely overwhelmed the Timberwolves from the opening minutes.
1. Spurs Control Game Early With Aggressive Start
San Antonio wasted little time establishing control Tuesday night. The Spurs attacked aggressively on both ends of the floor and quickly forced Minnesota into an uncomfortable rhythm. Their defensive pressure disrupted the Timberwolves’ offense while transition scoring allowed the home team to build momentum early. The intensity never faded as the game progressed. San Antonio consistently won loose-ball situations, controlled the glass, and capitalized on Minnesota turnovers. By the second half, the Spurs had stretched the lead to as many as 30 points, turning the game into one of the most lopsided contests of the series. A major factor in the victory was the productivity of San Antonio’s bench unit. Veteran forward Keldon Johnson provided instant offense, scoring 21 points while shooting 8-of-11 from the field. His efficiency helped maintain pressure on Minnesota whenever the starters rested. Harper complemented Johnson’s performance with a well-rounded effort that showcased his versatility. The rookie finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds, recording another playoff double-double while contributing defensively and helping push the pace offensively whenever opportunities emerged.
2. Harper Continues Historic Rookie Playoff Run
Harper’s latest performance added another accomplishment to what has already become a memorable postseason debut. The rookie previously recorded 27 points and 10 rebounds during San Antonio’s Game 3 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in the first round. That earlier performance gave Harper his first playoff double-double, while Tuesday’s outing made him the youngest guard in league history to achieve multiple postseason double-doubles. The previous record belonged to Rose, who accomplished the feat during his rookie playoff run with the Chicago Bulls in 2009. When San Antonio selected Harper with the No. 2 overall pick out of Rutgers Scarlet Knights, the organization viewed him as an energetic two-way player capable of strengthening the second unit. His rapid growth during the playoffs, however, has exceeded many expectations. Harper has elevated his production significantly during the postseason. He is averaging 13.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.3 steals while seeing increased playing time. His minutes have climbed to more than 25 per game as the coaching staff continues trusting him in high-pressure situations.
3. Rookie’s Defense Becoming Key Part of Spurs’ Success
Beyond the offensive numbers, Harper’s impact has also been evident defensively throughout the series against Minnesota. The rookie has regularly been tasked with helping slow down Anthony Edwards, one of the league’s most explosive scorers. Although containing Edwards completely remains difficult for any defense, Harper’s physical play and energy have helped make scoring opportunities more challenging. His willingness to compete defensively has become especially valuable for a Spurs team trying to match Minnesota’s athleticism and intensity. Harper also gained attention earlier in the series after cameras captured his reaction during the Game 4 incident involving Wembanyama and Naz Reid. The emotional sequence quickly circulated online and reflected the growing intensity between both teams as the matchup became increasingly physical. Now holding momentum in the series, San Antonio will look to close out Minnesota in Game 6 on Friday at Target Center. If the Spurs hope to finish the series on the road, Harper’s continued development and two-way production will likely remain a major factor in their success.
