Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie added another milestone to his distinguished career on Wednesday, receiving the Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award during ESPN’s Sports Humanitarian Awards ceremony in New York. The recognition celebrates individuals who have used the power of sports to create meaningful and lasting change beyond competition.

While Lurie is widely known for overseeing one of the NFL’s most successful franchises of the modern era, the award highlighted a different aspect of his legacy. For decades, he has worked to advance autism awareness, research, and healthcare through initiatives connected to both his family and the Eagles organization.

The honor places Lurie among a notable group of previous recipients, including Steve Gleason, Dikembe Mutombo, Chris Evert, and Dr. Richard Lapchick. It also reflects the growing impact of the Eagles Autism Foundation and the Lurie Autism Institute, two organizations that have become central to his philanthropic efforts.

For Lurie, however, the recognition represents more than a personal achievement. It serves as another opportunity to bring national attention to a cause that has shaped much of his work since purchasing the Eagles more than three decades ago.

1. Building a Legacy Beyond Football

Lurie’s connection to autism advocacy is deeply personal. His younger brother, Peter, was diagnosed with autism at an early age, an experience that left a lasting impression and influenced many of his priorities throughout his life.

When Lurie purchased the Eagles in 1994 for $195 million, he envisioned the franchise as more than a football team. Alongside pursuing championships, he hoped to create an organization capable of making a positive impact on communities both locally and globally.

Over time, that vision became increasingly intertwined with autism advocacy. Lurie has consistently emphasized the importance of using the platform provided by professional sports to support research, improve care, and raise awareness about autism spectrum disorders.

His efforts have helped position the Eagles as one of the leading organizations in sports philanthropy. The team’s commitment to autism-related initiatives has become a defining characteristic of the franchise under his leadership.

2. Expanding Support Through Research and Healthcare

The Eagles Autism Foundation, established in 2019, marked a significant step forward in Lurie’s mission. The organization focuses on funding innovative research while supporting programs designed to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by autism.

That commitment expanded further with the creation of the Lurie Autism Institute in 2025. Together, the two organizations have reportedly generated approximately $100 million to support research and healthcare initiatives, reflecting the scale of their growing influence.

Lurie has frequently spoken about the importance of pursuing innovative solutions in autism research. He has expressed hope that continued investment will lead to meaningful advancements that benefit communities around the world.

Receiving the Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award may further amplify those efforts. National recognition often creates additional opportunities for fundraising, partnerships, and public awareness, all of which could contribute to the long-term goals of the organizations he supports.

3. Success On and Off the Field

Lurie’s tenure with the Eagles has been defined by success in multiple areas. Since assuming ownership, the franchise has developed into one of the NFL’s premier organizations, capturing two Super Bowl championships and maintaining consistent competitiveness.

Yet, despite those accomplishments, Lurie has often suggested that his proudest achievements extend beyond football. His comments following the award reflected a continued focus on balancing organizational excellence with community impact.

He acknowledged being surprised by the recognition, noting that much of his time is spent working to strengthen both the Eagles and the initiatives dedicated to autism research. He also emphasized his desire for the franchise to become synonymous with innovation and leadership in the field.

That ambition appears increasingly attainable. As the Eagles continue to thrive on the field, their contributions away from the game have earned widespread respect and positioned the organization as a model for how sports can drive meaningful social change.
