The Chicago Cubs continued their strong early-season form on Thursday with an 8-7 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies, extending their winning streak to nine games. The result further solidified Chicago’s position near the top of the standings in the National League Central within the MLB.

Starting pitcher Edward Cabrera played a key role in the win, delivering seven innings of solid work with five strikeouts while limiting Philadelphia’s offense in a tightly contested matchup. His performance continued a strong start to his tenure with Chicago following a January trade.

Cabrera, who was acquired from the Miami Marlins during the offseason, has quickly become a stabilizing presence in the rotation. However, his postgame comments drew attention for reflecting on his previous environment.

While celebrating the team’s success, Cabrera suggested his current experience with the Cubs stands in contrast to earlier stops in his career.

1. Strong Performance Highlights Cubs’ Momentum

Cabrera’s outing against Philadelphia showcased both efficiency and composure on the mound. Over seven innings, he consistently worked ahead in counts and minimized scoring opportunities for a Phillies lineup that has struggled with consistency. His five strikeouts came at key moments, helping the Cubs maintain control during high-leverage situations. Chicago’s defense and bullpen support ensured the lead held until the final out. The win marked another step in a sustained stretch of success for the Cubs, who have now built one of the league’s longest active winning streaks. Their early-season form has positioned them as a contender in the division race. Cabrera’s contribution has been an important part of that momentum, providing length and stability in the starting rotation.

2. Postgame Comments Draw Attention

Following the game, Cabrera reflected on his current situation in Chicago and his adjustment to a new clubhouse. His remarks, however, carried added weight when comparing his experience to previous teams. “This is the best team I’ve been a part of … I haven’t been on a team like this before,” Cabrera said in his postgame press conference, via Marquee Sports Network. The comment was interpreted by some as a subtle contrast to his time with the Miami Marlins, where he spent several seasons developing as a major league pitcher. Cabrera had been with Miami from 2021 to 2025, a period that included both personal development and organizational challenges.

3. Career Development And Transition

During his time with the Marlins, Cabrera showed steady improvement, posting career highs in innings pitched and starts while refining his pitch mix. His fastball and changeup combination became key tools in his development. He recorded a standout performance on April 29, 2023, when he struck out 12 batters in a game against the Cubs, one of the best outings of his early career. However, injuries to his shoulder, finger, and elbow interrupted portions of his progress, while command issues, including elevated walk totals, also impacted consistency over time. After trade discussions began in late 2025, Cabrera was eventually dealt to Chicago, where he has since posted a 2-0 record with a 2.73 ERA and 22 strikeouts, signaling a strong transition into his new environment.
