The New York Knicks are beginning to look less like a surprise playoff story and more like a legitimate championship contender. After another dominant postseason stretch, conversations around the league have increasingly shifted from whether New York can compete in the East to whether they are truly ready to reach the NBA Finals.
That discussion intensified during a recent segment on Get Up, where analysts debated how dangerous the Knicks have become compared to the rest of the conference field. With other contenders still battling through difficult series, several panelists suggested New York may now hold one of the clearest paths toward the Eastern Conference crown.
At the same time, questions surrounding potential matchups continue to shape the conversation. Whether facing Cleveland or Detroit in a possible conference finals scenario, the Knicks are now being viewed as a team capable of handling different styles and playoff environments.
Still, the biggest test may ultimately wait beyond the East. While confidence surrounding the Knicks continues growing, analysts also acknowledged that any championship path would likely run through a loaded Western Conference contender led by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
1. Knicks Look ‘Ready to Win a Championship’, claim sports analysts
During a discussion on Get Up, ESPN analysts openly questioned whether the New York Knicks have now reached the level of a true championship contender after their recent playoff performances. One panelist stated the Knicks* ‘look ready to win a championship,*’ while another agreed they now have to be considered favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference. Part of that confidence came from the current playoff landscape, where several Eastern Conference contenders are still locked into physically demanding matchups against each other. The analysts suggested New York may benefit from that situation, especially if rival teams continue exhausting themselves before a potential conference finals appearance. Even with the growing optimism, concerns surrounding a possible NBA Finals matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder still remained part of the conversation. One analyst admitted that many Knicks fans continue asking, ‘Can we beat OKC?’ while acknowledging the Thunder would likely still enter a finals matchup as favorites. At the same time, the panel made it clear that New York has already proven capable of giving elite teams problems through physicality, depth, and confidence. While Oklahoma City may still hold the edge on paper, the analysts argued the Knicks have built enough momentum to believe they could at least give themselves ‘a fighter’s chance’ in a championship series.
2. Knicks reach Eastern Conference finals after historic sweep of 76ers
The growing confidence surrounding the New York Knicks comes after the team secured a dominant 4-0 series sweep over the Philadelphia 76ers to advance to the Eastern Conference Finals for a second consecutive season. New York completed the sweep on May 10 with a historic 144-114 victory that further strengthened the belief that the team may now be entering legitimate championship territory. Game 4 quickly turned into one of the most explosive offensive performances in NBA postseason history. The Knicks tied the NBA playoff record with 25 made three-pointers while also setting a new postseason record for most threes in a first quarter with 11 and matching the playoff record for most threes in a half with 18. Several players contributed heavily throughout the series, with Jalen Brunson continuing to lead the offense after scoring 35 points in Game 1 and adding another 33 points with nine assists in Game 3. In the close Game 2 victory, which featured 25 lead changes, New York once again showed its ability to execute late under pressure before eventually closing out the series in dominant fashion. The final game also saw major contributions from Deuce McBride, who stepped into the starting lineup after OG Anunoby suffered a right hamstring strain in Game 2. McBride responded with 25 points and seven made three-pointers, while Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart each added 17 points as the Knicks now prepare to face either the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Detroit Pistons in the Eastern Conference Finals.
3. NBA Playoffs and USA Basketball reflect league’s emerging new generation
As the New York Knicks continue pushing deeper into the postseason, the broader NBA landscape is also beginning to reflect a noticeable transition toward a younger generation of stars across both the league and USA Basketball. Several rising names have already started shaping the 2026 playoffs while simultaneously positioning themselves as key figures for the future of international competition. USA Basketball recently announced its Men’s U18 National Team training camp roster ahead of the upcoming FIBA U18 Men’s AmeriCup in Mexico, while the senior national program continues preparing for future World Cup qualifying windows. Players including James Wiseman and Elfrid Payton were among those selected for recent qualifying preparations as the organization continues building depth beyond its established stars. On the women’s side, Caitlin Clark, Paige Bueckers, and Angel Reese have all remained heavily involved in national team activities ahead of the 2026 Women’s World Cup qualifying process. Earlier this season, players such as Anthony Edwards, Tyrese Maxey, and Scottie Barnes were also highlighted during All-Star Weekend as representatives of the league’s next American core. Meanwhile, the playoffs themselves have continued showcasing the league’s shifting balance of power. Victor Wembanyama recently delivered a historic 39-point, 15-rebound, five-block performance to help the San Antonio Spurs take a 2-1 series lead over the Minnesota Timberwolves, while the Oklahoma City Thunder extended their dominance over the Los Angeles Lakers with a commanding 3-0 series advantage.
