The Indiana Fever edged the Washington Mystics 78-76 on Monday night in a tightly contested WNBA Commissioner’s Cup matchup, powered by a dramatic late-game shot from Caitlin Clark. The guard delivered the decisive moment with just seconds remaining, sealing Indiana’s sixth win of the season in memorable fashion.
Clark’s game-winning three-pointer came off a well-designed inbound play with 4.3 seconds left on the clock at CareFirst Arena. Teammate Sophie Cunningham delivered the precise pass, allowing Clark to rise and convert from long range under pressure.
The victory helped the Fever improve to 6–5, marking an important step as they continue to search for consistency early in the season. It also gave the team its first win in the Commissioner’s Cup standings, adding significance to an already dramatic finish.
Despite nearly losing control of a double-digit lead, Indiana held on in the final seconds to secure a much-needed bounce-back win following a recent loss to the New York Liberty.
1. Clark Delivers In The Clutch Moment
Clark finished the night with a game-high 19 points, showcasing her usual scoring range with four made three-pointers. Her final shot, however, stood out as the defining moment of the contest. In addition to her scoring output, she contributed three rebounds and five assists, continuing to impact the game in multiple areas. However, she also recorded five turnovers, reflecting some of the ongoing growing pains in her playmaking decisions. Still, her ability to deliver in high-pressure situations once again underscored why she is central to Indiana’s offensive identity. The Fever have increasingly relied on her shot creation late in games. The final possession was a clear example of execution under pressure, with Clark reading the defense and converting when it mattered most.
2. Balanced Effort Fuels Fever Victory
While Clark provided the headline moment, Indiana received strong contributions across the roster. Aliyah Boston played a key all-around role with 14 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks. Her presence inside helped stabilize the Fever on both ends of the floor, particularly during stretches when Washington threatened to erase the lead. Boston’s rebounding and defensive activity were crucial in limiting second-chance opportunities. Kelsey Mitchell also added 15 points, providing consistent perimeter scoring support alongside Clark. Her ability to stretch the defense helped open space for Indiana’s late-game execution. Together, the trio formed the backbone of Indiana’s offense, combining interior strength and perimeter shot-making to keep the Fever competitive throughout the game.
3. Mystics Push Back But Fall Short Late
The Washington Mystics nearly erased a 17-point deficit, putting significant pressure on Indiana down the stretch. Despite the comeback effort, they ultimately fell short in the closing seconds. Michaela Onyenwere led Washington with 17 points, shooting efficiently from beyond the arc. Her scoring helped fuel the team’s second-half push. Sonia Citron added 12 points, along with five assists and two blocks, contributing on both ends as the Mystics tightened the game late. Although Washington’s rally created a tense finish, Indiana’s execution in the final possession proved decisive, preventing the comeback from fully materializing and securing the Fever’s narrow win.
