Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is set to enter the transfer portal, sparking speculation about his next destination. LSU, under newly hired head coach Lane Kiffin, has been identified as one of the schools to monitor for his services.

Kiffin, known for his playful social media presence, drew attention to Lagway’s transfer plans by reposting an On3 post announcing his portal entry on X, formerly Twitter. Soon after, Pete Nakos reported that LSU is among the early programs exploring Lagway as a potential addition.

The LSU quarterback room is crowded, featuring sophomore Michael Van Buren Jr., redshirt freshman Colin Hurley, true freshman Emile Picarella III, freshman Tre People, and graduating fifth-year Garrett Nussmeier. Van Buren, who started games for both Mississippi State and LSU in previous seasons, had expressed a desire to stay, though Kiffin’s arrival may shift the dynamics.

Additionally, speculation has swirled about whether Trinidad Chambliss, the standout Ole Miss quarterback who excelled after transferring from Division II Ferris State, might follow Kiffin to Baton Rouge. His potential departure or waiver situation could open the door for Lagway as LSU seeks a top-tier signal-caller.

1. LSU’s Quarterback Landscape

LSU enters the offseason with multiple options at quarterback, though few have proven consistent starters. Van Buren, who started a combined 11 games over the last two seasons, provides experience but may face competition under Kiffin’s new system. Redshirt freshman Colin Hurley and true freshman Emile Picarella III are largely untested at the collegiate level, leaving uncertainty about LSU’s depth chart. Freshman Tre People also figures to compete, though his role in 2026 is unclear. Garrett Nussmeier, the most experienced quarterback on the roster with 23 starts, has exhausted his eligibility, leaving LSU to consider new leadership for the program. Kiffin’s arrival may accelerate changes in the quarterback room, creating opportunities for transfers or new talent. Adding a player like Lagway could give LSU a quarterback with starting experience and the ability to compete immediately, potentially stabilizing a position that has seen significant turnover in recent seasons.

2. Trinidad Chambliss Factor

Trinidad Chambliss, who transferred from Ferris State to Ole Miss, emerged as a dynamic quarterback, throwing for 3,016 yards, 18 touchdowns, and three interceptions while rushing for 470 yards and six scores. His performance helped Ole Miss reach the CFP for the first time in program history. Chambliss’s potential to join LSU alongside Kiffin remains uncertain. He has filed for a waiver seeking an additional year of eligibility, though the NCAA’s decision is pending. His status could significantly impact LSU’s quarterback plans. If Chambliss cannot transfer or the waiver is denied, LSU would need to look elsewhere for a starting-caliber quarterback, making Lagway one of the more appealing options in the portal. Lagway’s experience in SEC competition and proven arm talent position him as a logical target for the Tigers. Even if Chambliss does join LSU, Lagway could provide additional depth or competition, ensuring that the program has multiple viable options under center.

3. Lagway’s Appeal and Potential Fit

DJ Lagway’s portal entry makes him one of the more intriguing options for programs seeking a transfer quarterback. At Florida, he has displayed the ability to lead an offense but also faced challenges, including a notable five-interception game against LSU in September. Despite that performance, his experience and skill set could translate well to a new system under Kiffin. LSU fans may have concerns about his previous struggles against their team, but coaching changes and scheme fit could rejuvenate his career. LSU’s need for a proven signal-caller, combined with Lagway’s portal availability, aligns with Kiffin’s approach of bringing in immediate-impact players. A successful transition could help the Tigers stabilize the quarterback position and maintain competitiveness in the SEC West. Ultimately, Lagway represents a potential short-term solution and competition within LSU’s quarterback room, whether Chambliss joins, stays, or moves on. His decision will be closely watched as programs finalize offseason plans.
