The Cleveland Browns are counting on several young players to help reshape their offense heading into the 2026 NFL season, and tight end Harold Fannin Jr. is quickly becoming one of the most intriguing names on the roster. While much of the offseason attention has centered on the team’s new additions, former Browns standout Gary Barnidge believes Fannin could be ready for a significant leap.
Barnidge recently praised the young tight end’s receiving ability, describing him as a player with rare athletic traits who has the potential to become a difficult matchup for opposing defenses. At the same time, he emphasized that continued growth as a blocker will be essential if Fannin hopes to become a complete player.
The Browns enter the new season with plenty of unanswered questions on offense, particularly at quarterback. Even so, the organization believes its collection of young playmakers can provide optimism as the team works to become more competitive under head coach Todd Monken.
If Fannin builds on the encouraging signs from last season, he could become one of the key pieces in Cleveland’s evolving offensive attack. His combination of size, athleticism, and pass-catching ability gives the Browns another weapon capable of creating mismatches across the field.
1. Barnidge Sees Star Potential
Barnidge did not hold back when evaluating Fannin’s upside, expressing confidence that the young tight end possesses the skill set to become a major contributor for Cleveland. He praised Fannin’s ability to generate yards after the catch, an attribute that separates many of the NFL’s top receiving tight ends.
According to Barnidge, Fannin moves more like a wide receiver than a traditional tight end. His athleticism and route-running ability allow him to create separation from defenders while also giving quarterbacks a reliable target in the middle of the field.
Those qualities have already made him an appealing option within Cleveland’s offense. Tight ends capable of stretching the field while creating extra yardage after receptions have become increasingly valuable in today’s NFL, and Barnidge believes Fannin fits that profile.
Still, the former Pro Bowl tight end stressed that offensive production alone will not determine Fannin’s long-term success. Becoming a complete player will require steady improvement in other areas of his game.
2. Blocking Remains the Next Step
While Barnidge praised Fannin’s receiving skills, he also pointed to run blocking as the biggest area for development. He believes becoming a more dependable blocker will make the young tight end significantly harder for opposing defenses to contain.
Last season, Cleveland used Fannin primarily as a receiving option rather than asking him to consistently handle traditional in-line blocking responsibilities. He occasionally lined up in different formations, including some snaps as a fullback, but rarely served as the focal point of the running game.
Barnidge hopes the Browns expand that part of Fannin’s role during the upcoming season. He believes relying too heavily on the tight end as a receiver could make the offense more predictable and allow defenses to anticipate how he will be used.
Developing into a complete two-way tight end would not only increase Fannin’s value but also provide Cleveland with greater flexibility when designing offensive game plans. His willingness to improve in that area could determine just how large his role becomes.
3. Browns Building a Young Offense
Fannin joins a Cleveland offense filled with developing talent. Although the quarterback position remains unsettled, the Browns believe several young players can help establish a stronger foundation moving forward.
Running back Quinson Judkins is viewed as one of the team’s potential breakout candidates, while wide receiver Jerry Jeudy leads a receiving corps that also features promising rookies KC Concepcion and Denzel Boston. Together, they provide Cleveland with a blend of youth and playmaking ability.
The offensive line remains another important storyline entering the season. In an effort to strengthen the unit, the Browns selected left tackle Spencer Fano with the ninth overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, hoping he can immediately improve pass protection and run blocking.
If Cleveland’s young core develops as expected, Fannin could become one of the offense’s central figures. His continued growth as both a receiver and blocker may ultimately help determine how much progress the Browns make during the 2026 campaign.
