The Cleveland Guardians earned a 4–2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday, powered by a standout pitching performance from right-hander Gavin Williams. The win showcased both dominant starting pitching and timely offensive execution as Cleveland continued its strong early-season form.

Williams delivered one of the most impressive outings of his career, striking out 11 batters over seven innings and leading Major League Baseball in strikeouts. His command and ability to neutralize Baltimore’s lineup proved decisive in controlling the pace of the game.

While Baltimore managed to keep the score close at times, Cleveland responded with key swings at critical moments. A three-run home run from Brayan Rocchio ultimately provided the cushion needed to secure the win.

The Guardians’ combination of pitching depth and situational hitting once again proved effective, as they held Baltimore to just two runs while generating enough offense to stay ahead throughout the contest.

1. Williams Sets The Tone On The Mound

Gavin Williams delivered a commanding performance, allowing just one earned run on three hits while striking out 11 batters across seven innings. His ability to consistently miss bats allowed Cleveland to control the game from the start. Williams matched one of the highest strikeout totals of his career, marking his sixth double-digit strikeout game and second of the season. His 100-pitch outing included 73 strikes, reflecting both efficiency and control. After giving up a solo home run in the fourth inning, Williams responded by retiring the final 11 batters he faced. That stretch underscored his ability to quickly regain command and shut down opposing momentum. With 40 strikeouts on the season, Williams now leads Major League Baseball in that category, while maintaining a strong 2.12 ERA and limiting opposing hitters to a .133 average through five starts.

2. Timely Offense Delivers Key Runs

Cleveland’s offense provided just enough support, highlighted by a decisive swing from Brayan Rocchio in the fifth inning. With two outs and runners on base, Rocchio delivered a three-run home run to right field that shifted control firmly to the Guardians. The inning began with Rhys Hoskins reaching base via walk, followed by a single from Daniel Schneemann, setting the stage for Rocchio’s breakthrough moment. His 357-foot shot off Dean Kremer proved to be the turning point in the game. Baltimore starter Kremer worked six innings but allowed three runs on two hits, with Rocchio’s homer accounting for the majority of the damage. Despite keeping Cleveland’s lineup relatively contained, the one swing proved costly. The Guardians’ ability to capitalize on limited opportunities highlighted their efficiency at the plate, particularly in high-leverage situations.

3. Late Drama And Bullpen Strength Seal Win

Baltimore attempted to mount a comeback in the eighth inning when Gunnar Henderson connected on a home run to cut the deficit to 3–2. The blast briefly shifted momentum back toward the Orioles. Cleveland responded immediately in the bottom half of the inning when Bo Naylor launched a 397-foot solo home run, his first of the season. The shot restored the two-run cushion and helped stabilize the Guardians’ lead. The bullpen then closed out the game effectively, with Cade Smith striking out the side in the ninth inning to earn his fifth save of the season. His dominant finish ensured there would be no further Baltimore rally. Overall, Cleveland pitchers combined for 16 strikeouts while limiting the Orioles to just four hits, reinforcing the team’s strength on the mound.
