The Washington Mystics entered Friday’s matchup against the New York Liberty looking for a statement victory, and rookie guard Georgia Amoore helped provide exactly that. In a competitive battle at Barclays Center, Washington defeated the Liberty 86-83, earning one of its biggest wins of the season and showing signs of progress during a rebuilding campaign.

The Mystics had struggled against top competition before the matchup, with only one previous victory over a team currently inside the league’s top seven standings. That changed when Washington showed composure on the road and relied on contributions throughout the lineup to defeat a Liberty team sitting among the WNBA’s best.

Second-year forward Kiki Iriafen was impressed by the way Amoore handled the pressure. The rookie point guard has been asked to lead an offense while adjusting to the professional level after returning from a major injury, but Iriafen believes Amoore’s confidence and maturity have continued to grow.

“She carries herself with a lot of poise,” Iriafen said after the game, highlighting Amoore’s ability to stay composed while also finding ways to involve her teammates. The veteran mindset from the young guard has become an important part of Washington’s development.

1. Amoore’s Growth At Point Guard

Amoore’s rookie season has included ups and downs, especially after missing the previous year because of a torn ACL. Despite the challenges, she has continued to show flashes of why Washington selected her with the sixth overall pick in the draft. Her role has not always been easy. Playing point guard in the WNBA requires managing pace, creating offense, and handling defensive pressure, all while adapting to a faster and more physical style of basketball. Amoore has had to learn those responsibilities while regaining her rhythm. The recent stretch has provided encouraging signs. Before the Liberty win, Amoore contributed during Washington’s victory over Connecticut, scoring 10 points and adding two assists while the Mystics dealt with injuries to key players. Her partnership with fellow guard Sonia Citron has also started to develop. Both players have shown the ability to create offense and move the ball, giving Washington more options when opponents try to slow down their attack.

2. Mystics Find Multiple Ways To Win

Washington’s last two victories demonstrated the team’s ability to succeed in different situations. Against Connecticut, Citron carried much of the offensive responsibility, scoring 26 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while the Mystics played without some important contributors. Against New York, the formula changed. Instead of relying on one standout performance, Washington received double-digit scoring from every starter for the first time since 2022. The balanced effort allowed the Mystics to compete with one of the league’s strongest teams. The return of Iriafen and center Shakira Austin provided another boost. The two combined for 34 points and 13 rebounds, giving Washington more strength inside and helping balance the perimeter-focused attack. The victory was also impressive because the Mystics succeeded despite struggling from three-point range. Washington made just four of 18 attempts from beyond the arc but compensated with strong ball movement, finishing with 20 assists and limiting mistakes.

3. Building Toward The Future

The Mystics remain in the middle of a rebuilding process, but recent performances have created optimism around the direction of the franchise. With a 7-7 record, Washington remains in the playoff conversation and has shown it can compete against established contenders. Head coach Sydney Johnson has continued to manage the development of his young players carefully. Amoore has started every game this season, though her minutes have varied as the coaching staff balances growth with consistency. Johnson emphasized that patience remains important for Amoore. He pointed to the importance of keeping her healthy, allowing her to develop her creativity, and giving her time to fully adjust to the professional game. While Iriafen and Citron immediately stepped into major roles after being drafted near the top of their class, Amoore’s path has been different. She did not have the same opportunity for a full offseason preparation, making her recent improvement even more encouraging.
