Georgia Tech made a notable addition to its roster construction for the 2026–27 season by securing a commitment from Troy forward Victor Valdes, one of the Sun Belt’s most productive players. The move marks an early roster-building win for new head coach Scott Cross as he reshapes the Yellow Jackets.

Valdes announced his transfer decision on Friday, according to reporting from On3, ending a three-year run at Troy where he developed from a bench contributor into a primary offensive option. His arrival gives Georgia Tech an experienced upperclassman with proven production.

The forward enters his final season of eligibility as he steps up from the Sun Belt to the ACC, bringing both experience and versatility to a program looking to rebound in conference play. His connection with Cross also adds familiarity to the transition.

Georgia Tech continues to overhaul its roster after a difficult season and coaching change, aiming to re-establish itself as a competitive force in the ACC.

1. Valdes Emerges As A Proven Sun Belt Playmaker

Victor Valdes’ breakout season at Troy came after two years of gradual development in a reserve role. During the 2023–24 and 2024–25 seasons, he primarily came off the bench while adjusting to the college game. That changed in 2025–26 when he earned a full-time starting role and immediately became the centerpiece of Troy’s offense. His production rose significantly as he took on increased responsibility. Valdes averaged 14.8 points, 4.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game, leading the team in both scoring and playmaking. His all-around contributions earned him All-Sun Belt Third Team honors. He also delivered in high-pressure moments, scoring 14 points in Troy’s NCAA Tournament loss to Nebraska, where he was the team’s only consistent double-figure scorer.

2. Reunion With Scott Cross Shapes Transfer Decision

Valdes’ decision to transfer reunites him with Scott Cross, who previously coached him during his breakout development at Troy. Their shared history is expected to ease his transition into a new system at Georgia Tech. Cross spent seven seasons at Troy, guiding the program to sustained success, including five consecutive 20-win campaigns to close his tenure. His final years included multiple NCAA Tournament appearances. That success helped elevate Cross into the Georgia Tech job, where he now begins a rebuilding effort in the ACC. Valdes represents one of his first key additions in this new chapter. The familiarity between coach and player is expected to play a role in how quickly Valdes adapts to the higher level of competition.

3. Georgia Tech Looks To Rebuild In ACC

Georgia Tech enters a transitional phase after finishing the 2025–26 season with an 11–20 record and a 2–16 mark in ACC play. The struggles led to a coaching change, with Damon Stoudamire departing after three seasons. The program has not reached the NCAA Tournament since 2021, and Cross has been tasked with reversing that trend. Early transfer additions like Valdes are part of that rebuilding strategy. Valdes brings immediate experience and production to a roster in need of offensive stability and veteran leadership. His ability to score and facilitate gives Georgia Tech a versatile perimeter option. As the roster continues to take shape, the Yellow Jackets are aiming to build a foundation capable of competing in the ACC and returning to postseason contention.
