Gerrit Cole’s return to the New York Yankees rotation has been a gradual process, but Tuesday night offered another encouraging sign that the veteran ace is moving closer to his old form. In a 12-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox, Cole delivered his strongest workload since returning from Tommy John surgery.

The 2023 American League Cy Young Award winner reached a season-high 90 pitches, showing improved stamina and control after a challenging stretch. Following two difficult appearances against the Cleveland Guardians, Cole responded with a composed performance against a Chicago team that had recently handled some of the National League’s top competition.

Cole allowed two runs on three hits over his outing while recording six strikeouts and two walks. More than the numbers, his ability to stay composed and manage the game showed why the Yankees remain confident in his comeback.

After the game, Cole offered a unique description of his recovery process, comparing his current journey to the creative work of legendary painter Bob Ross. The analogy reflected his understanding that rebuilding after a major injury takes time, patience, and adjustments.

1. Cole Embraces the Rebuilding Process

Cole explained that his return feels like creating something from the beginning. Rather than expecting immediate perfection, he views each start as another opportunity to develop and improve. “I feel like it’s kind of a blank canvas,” Cole said when discussing his current approach. He compared his progress to adding layers of paint and seeing what the final result becomes over time. The mindset highlights the reality of returning from Tommy John surgery, especially for a pitcher in the later stages of his career. At 35 years old, Cole understands that regaining previous dominance requires both physical recovery and mental patience. Instead of forcing results, Cole has focused on building confidence and finding his rhythm. That approach has already produced promising results, as he enters his next start with a 2.57 ERA through his first six appearances of the season.

2. Yankees Provide Powerful Support

Cole’s strong outing came with plenty of offensive help from the Yankees lineup. New York gave him a comfortable lead early and continued adding pressure throughout the game. Cody Bellinger, Ben Rice, Paul Goldschmidt, Spencer Jones, and Jose Caballero each contributed two RBIs, creating one of the team’s most complete offensive performances of the season. Anthony Volpe and Bellinger also delivered three-hit games, while every player in the starting lineup contributed in some form. The Yankees finished with 16 hits, giving Cole valuable run support. That type of offensive production can be especially important for a pitcher returning from injury. Knowing the lineup can create separation allows Cole to attack hitters more aggressively and continue focusing on his development.

3. Veteran Ace Searching for Final Form

Despite the encouraging signs, Cole knows challenges remain. Returning from a long absence requires adjustments, and not every outing will be as smooth as Tuesday’s performance. The veteran right-hander understands that setbacks are part of the process. His experience and past success, however, give him confidence that he can navigate the difficult moments ahead. Cole’s career has already included plenty of adversity, and his ability to overcome obstacles has helped establish him as one of baseball’s most respected pitchers. His current comeback represents another chapter in that story. The Yankees are hoping the version of Cole they see later in the season resembles the dominant ace who previously controlled games with power and precision. For now, his steady progress is a positive sign for a team with championship expectations.
