The Oklahoma City Thunder entered the 2026 postseason carrying the expectations that come with being defending NBA champions. After capturing the franchise’s first title in years by defeating Indiana in the 2025 NBA Finals, Oklahoma City spent the season proving it remained among the league’s elite teams.

Leading the charge once again was Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, whose individual excellence helped keep the Thunder at the top of the Western Conference. The star guard successfully defended his MVP award and guided Oklahoma City to another dominant regular season, reinforcing the belief that the team could contend for another championship.

However, repeating as champions proved to be a far greater challenge. The Thunder’s playoff run ended in heartbreaking fashion Saturday night when they fell to the San Antonio Spurs in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals, ending their hopes of returning to the NBA Finals.

In the aftermath of the defeat, Gilgeous-Alexander reflected on the experience and offered a candid assessment of what it takes to remain on top. His comments highlighted a reality that many championship teams discover: winning a title is difficult, but defending it can be even harder.

1. A Champion’s Perspective

Gilgeous-Alexander spoke openly after the loss, recognizing the magnitude of the challenge his team faced throughout the season. Having already experienced the journey to a championship, he understood better than most how demanding the process can be. The Thunder star noted that winning an NBA championship is one of the toughest accomplishments in professional sports. Every contender spends months navigating injuries, roster adjustments, and playoff pressure before even getting an opportunity to compete for a title. For Oklahoma City, the challenge was amplified by the expectations that followed its championship run. As defending champions, the Thunder became a target for every opponent while also carrying the pressure of proving their success was sustainable. Although the season ended short of another Finals appearance, Gilgeous-Alexander’s comments reflected pride rather than frustration. The experience reinforced how difficult sustained success can be, even for a talented and well-constructed roster.

2. Thunder Battle Until the End

Despite the disappointing result, Oklahoma City fought hard throughout a competitive series against the rising Spurs. The matchup stretched to the full seven games, demonstrating how evenly matched the two Western Conference powers were. The Thunder were forced to overcome several obstacles during the postseason, including injuries that gradually tested the team’s depth. While Oklahoma City continued to compete at a high level, those setbacks became increasingly difficult to manage as the series progressed. Gilgeous-Alexander delivered another outstanding performance in the deciding game. He finished with 35 points, nine assists, four rebounds, three steals, and one block while shooting efficiently from both the field and the free-throw line. Several teammates also contributed in the effort. Cason Wallace added 17 points and seven rebounds, while Alex Caruso and Jared McCain each scored 12 points. Jaylin Williams recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but the collective effort was not enough to extend the season.

3. Looking Ahead to Next Season

Although the defeat was painful, the Thunder have plenty of reasons for optimism moving forward. The organization remains one of the league’s deepest and most talented teams, with a core capable of competing for championships for years to come. Oklahoma City’s regular-season performance demonstrated its consistency and strength. The Thunder finished with an impressive 64-18 record, earning the top seed in the Western Conference and establishing themselves as one of the NBA’s most complete teams. Their postseason journey further reinforced that status. Oklahoma City swept both the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers before encountering the Spurs, showing that the team remains among the league’s elite despite falling short of another Finals berth. As the offseason begins, the Thunder will focus on recovery, development, and preparation for another title pursuit. With Gilgeous-Alexander leading the way and a talented supporting cast around him, Oklahoma City appears well-positioned to remain a major contender in the seasons ahead.
