Grizzlies Lean Heavily on Jaren Jackson Jr. as Play-In Hopes Hang in the Balance

The Memphis Grizzlies are running short on margin for error. Entering the final stretch of the season, they sit three games behind the Portland Trail Blazers for the last NBA Play-In Tournament spot, a gap that has widened after a turbulent stretch marked by injuries, travel fatigue and uneven play.
A recent victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves offered temporary relief, stopping a six-game skid that followed the team’s return from Europe. Yet even in the win, the underlying issue was hard to miss: Memphis leaned heavily on one player to carry both the offense and the defensive load.
That player, as has often been the case, was Jaren Jackson Jr. The former Defensive Player of the Year once again shouldered the bulk of the responsibility, producing another standout stat line while the roster around him continued to fluctuate.
For head coach Tuomas Iisalo and the Grizzlies, the challenge is clear. Jackson can anchor a game, but Memphis needs far more balance if it hopes to stay alive in the postseason race.
1. A Team Searching for Stability
Consistency has been elusive for the Grizzlies. A demanding travel schedule and a difficult run of opponents combined to derail momentum, culminating in six straight losses that dropped Memphis further down the standings. The team’s recent return from overseas play only added to the struggle. Fatigue showed on both ends of the floor, with late-game execution and defensive rotations slipping during critical moments. Injuries have compounded the issue. With Ja Morant and Zach Edey sidelined, Memphis has lacked both a primary playmaker and interior presence, forcing others to stretch beyond their usual roles. As a result, the Grizzlies have found themselves scrambling nightly for answers, trying different lineups and combinations while hoping to rediscover the cohesion that defined their better stretches earlier in the year.
2. Jackson Carrying the Load
Against Minnesota, Jackson delivered a performance that kept Memphis afloat. He poured in 30 points to lead all scorers and added six rebounds, continuing a run in which he has frequently paced the team offensively. It marked the fourth time in six games that Jackson topped the Grizzlies in scoring, a testament to both his versatility and the team’s current dependence on him. He has been asked to score inside and out, protect the rim and clean the glass — often all within the same possession. The rebounding numbers further illustrate the burden. In several recent contests, Jackson has pulled down between nine and 12 boards, yet those efforts haven’t always translated into wins. The production has been impressive, but it hasn’t been enough to mask broader shortcomings. Expecting one player to anchor every phase of the game is a risky formula. Over the long haul, it becomes unsustainable, particularly with a road-heavy schedule looming and little time for rest.
3. Iisalo’s Call for Collective Effort
Iisalo has been careful not to frame Jackson as a cure-all. While praising his impact, the coach has emphasized the importance of what he describes as a “menu” — multiple offensive and defensive options that allow the team to adapt rather than rely on a single star. Having more contributors available, including the return of players like Ty Jerome, expands that menu. It gives Memphis additional ball-handling, shooting and lineup flexibility, elements that ease the pressure on Jackson. Defensively, Jackson remains the backbone, routinely altering shots and erasing mistakes at the rim. But even that strength, Iisalo notes, works best when supported by team rebounding and disciplined rotations. With five of the next six games on the road and the Play-In picture tightening, Memphis’ path forward depends on shared responsibility. Jackson can tilt games, but the Grizzlies need steady contributions across the roster if they’re going to keep their season alive.
