The Atlanta Hawks entered their matchup against the Dallas Mavericks aiming to continue their late-season surge and extend a growing winning streak. Facing an opponent that has also endured its share of struggles this season, Atlanta appeared to be in position early to secure a comfortable victory.

For much of the game, the Hawks controlled the tempo and built a steady lead. Their offense moved efficiently, and the team entered the second half with confidence as they pushed their advantage into double digits.

However, the Mavericks refused to fade quietly. A scoring burst from Khris Middleton and Klay Thompson dramatically shifted the momentum during the third quarter, suddenly turning what had looked like a routine win into a tightly contested battle.

In the end, Atlanta responded when it mattered most. Led by Jalen Johnson and Nickeil Alexander-Walker, the Hawks closed strong to secure a 124–112 victory and stretch their winning streak to seven games.

1. Mavericks Mount a Third-Quarter Push

Atlanta appeared firmly in control through the first half and early third quarter, maintaining a comfortable lead while executing effectively on both ends of the floor. The Hawks’ offense found its rhythm early, allowing them to create separation against Dallas. That margin began to shrink late in the third quarter as Middleton and Thompson caught fire. Each player scored 10 points during the period, sparking a Mavericks run that quickly cut the deficit to single digits. The momentum carried into the fourth quarter, where Dallas managed to tie the game at 97. For Atlanta, the situation was familiar territory, as several games during their recent winning streak had required a composed response late. Rather than panic, the Hawks relied on the players who have increasingly taken on closing responsibilities this season, setting the stage for another decisive finish.

2. Johnson and Alexander-Walker Take Control

With the game hanging in the balance, Johnson stepped forward with an aggressive scoring stretch. The forward poured in 13 points in the fourth quarter, repeatedly attacking the basket and forcing Dallas defenders to react. Alexander-Walker complemented that effort with timely perimeter shooting. He knocked down two crucial three-pointers late in the quarter, helping Atlanta regain control and extend its lead during the decisive stretch. Head coach Quin Snyder credited the pair’s chemistry and decision-making in the closing minutes. According to Snyder, Johnson’s willingness to move the ball and create opportunities allowed the Hawks to find open looks in critical moments. For Johnson, the success reflects the growing understanding between him and Alexander-Walker. Through repeated practice reps and in-game experience, the two have developed a rhythm that helps them create space and scoring opportunities for one another when defenses tighten late in games.

3. Defense Seals the Victory

While Atlanta’s offense provided the finishing touch, the Hawks also relied heavily on improved defense in the final minutes. After Dallas found success earlier in the game, Atlanta focused on limiting second chances and forcing tougher shots. Alexander-Walker pointed out that the Mavericks had been effective on the offensive glass earlier in the contest, generating extra possessions and open perimeter looks. Tightening that area became a priority late in the game. Much of the defensive attention centered on Thompson, whose shooting surge helped spark Dallas’ comeback attempt. Atlanta adjusted by pushing shooters off the three-point line and forcing them to attack inside instead of relying on perimeter shots. Those adjustments helped the Hawks regain control during the final three minutes. With stops leading to transition opportunities, Atlanta reestablished its rhythm and closed out the contest to secure another win during a crucial stretch of the season.
