NASCAR driver Alex Bowman revealed on his Instagram story that his dog Finn has been diagnosed with cancer that has spread rapidly, leaving the family with limited time left together.

“2026 has been tough go of it,” Bowman shared. “Finn has cancer that has spread very quickly. He doesn’t have much longer with us, but we’re trying to make the most out of the time we have left.”

The update comes amid what has already been a challenging season for the Hendrick Motorsports driver. For Bowman, who has long been vocal about his love for his rescue dogs, this news hits especially hard. Finn has been a constant companion through the highs and lows of a Cup Series career that spans more than a decade.

According to Bowman’s own words, shared directly on social media and reported across NASCAR communities, the diagnosis arrived suddenly, forcing the Bowman family to shift their focus from racing pressures to cherishing the final moments with their furry family member.

This personal blow comes at a time when Bowman has been tested in multiple ways. Earlier this year, he missed races due to vertigo. He returned after medical clearance, but the challenges haven’t stopped. Through it all, Bowman has shown resilience. He’s a veteran of Hendrick Motorsports in the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet, with eight career Cup Series wins to his name. His CV includes Daytona 500 poles and a 2024 Chicago Street Course victory that ended a long winless streak. Yet 2026 has brought inconsistency on track alongside these off-track struggles. Insiders have even speculated about his future, with one suggesting retirement after this season could be on the table, given the cumulative wear and tear from past injuries like concussions and a fractured vertebra. Bowman hasn’t addressed that publicly amid the focus on Finn, but it’s clear this year has been about battling through adversity.

3. Longtime Advocate for Shelter Pets

Bowman’s love for animals goes far beyond his own home. For years, he’s partnered with Ally Racing and Best Friends Animal Society to raise money and awareness for shelter pets. The collaboration has raised $1 million for homeless animals through special paint schemes on his car, donations tied to race wins, and hands-on shelter visits. “He’s inspired by his own rescued dogs,” reports from the partnership highlight. Finn and the others opened his eyes to the importance of adoption. “Every rescue deserves that same second chance,” Bowman has said. That work continues even as he navigates this difficult chapter with Finn. NASCAR fans have responded with an outpouring of support. Social media is flooded with messages of sympathy. Many relate to the unique pain of saying goodbye to a four-legged best friend who was there through life’s biggest moments. Those close to the situation describe Finn as full of personality. He and his siblings kept Bowman on his toes during rare downtime. Road trips, yard time, and simple hangs helped the driver reset away from the high-stakes world of NASCAR. Losing Roscoe previously was already tough for the family. Now facing Finn’s rapid decline feels like another heavy hit in what’s been a tough stretch. Bowman emphasized they’re making the most of the remaining time. Behind the stats and podiums sits a guy dealing with the same heartaches many fans face. This time is about the fleeting time with beloved pets, the grind of a demanding job, and the search for balance.
