Ohio State head coach Ryan Day could not resist taking a good-natured shot at legendary coach Nick Saban this week. He claimed that star safety Caleb Downs was an absolute mess when he first arrived in Columbus from Alabama.

The lighthearted exchange comes on the heels of the Dallas Cowboys selecting Downs with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The move validated the defensive back’s status as a generational talent. However, Day made sure to remind everyone that transitioning the blue-chip prospect from Tuscaloosa into a Buckeye required a bit of early recalibration.

Speaking on the set of College GameDay right next to the retired Alabama icon, Day offered a candid and humorous assessment of his prized defender’s early days in scarlet and gray, according to a recent report by The Columbus Dispatch.

The interaction offered a rare, televised glimpse into the competitive banter among the men who run college football’s most elite programs.

1. The Immediate Impact of a Blue-Chip Transfer

When Downs officially entered the transfer portal following Saban’s sudden retirement after the 2023 season, every major program in the country scrambled for his services. He had just finished a staggering true freshman campaign for the Crimson Tide, leading the team with 107 overall tackles, 70 solo stops, two interceptions, and a forced fumble. He earned second-team All-America honors and established himself as the premier defensive back in the sport.

Yet, when Day evaluated those early spring practices, he saw a player who needed some adjustments to fit the Ohio State standard. Day noted that he was initially surprised by what he saw on the field. “The first thing for me that surprised me was that when Caleb came to Ohio State. He was a mess. I don’t know what they were doing at Alabama.”

Saban, never one to back down from a television spar, fired right back. The seven-time national champion smirked and quipped that the observation did not really surprise him, sending a ripple of laughter across the desk.

Despite the comedic jab, Day quickly pivoted to intense praise for the young man who anchored his defense. “I mean it took us a while to get him going. I will say this: I feel that he was the most NFL-ready as an underclassman that I have ever been around. Certainly, when he came to us, he could have played in the NFL then. He was coached by the best. He grew up in a way that he loved football. From a young age, he just loved football. The best thing is that he makes everyone on the field better. The first year he was with us, the second half of the season, we put him in a place to be successful. To leave more of an impact on the game. I think that’s going to be important wherever he goes and whatever team takes him, " the Ohio State coach admitted.

That football intelligence blossomed during his tenure in the Big Ten. Downs grew up living and breathing the sport, and that inherent passion translated into historic production. Day praised his safety for elevating the play of every single teammate on the field.

The hardware certainly backs up the head coach’s assessment. Downs elevated his game to an entirely different stratosphere at Ohio State. He was named a unanimous All-America selection in both 2024 and 2025.

During his final collegiate season, he swept the national defensive awards. He won the Lott Trophy as the top defensive player and the Jim Thorpe Award as the premier defensive back. Moreover, he was named the 2025 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year (POTY), piloting a dominant Buckeye defense that secured the 2024 national championship.

That resume made him an undeniable commodity on draft night. The Dallas Cowboys organization recognized the value, trading two fifth-round picks to the Miami Dolphins to move up one crucial spot from No. 12 to No. 11 to secure his rights. Downs became the fourth Ohio State player selected in the top eleven picks of the 2026 draft, joining wide receiver Carnell Tate, linebacker Arvell Reese, and fellow linebacker Sonny Styles.

3. Looking Ahead to Sundays

Downs also became the first Ohio State safety to hear his name called in the first round since Malik Hooker went No. 15 overall to the Indianapolis Colts in 2017.

Fittingly, Downs will now join Hooker in the Dallas secondary, bringing that Ohio State winning tradition directly to the professional ranks.

Downs will now pack his bags for Texas, tasked with shoring up the back end of a Dallas defense that has desperate championship aspirations.

Meanwhile, Day and the Ohio State coaching staff face the daunting challenge of replacing a generational talent in their secondary as they prepare for another grueling Big Ten schedule.
