The Charlotte Hornets entered Sunday’s NBA Draft lottery hoping to take another major step forward after one of the franchise’s most encouraging seasons in recent years. Instead, the team walked away from Chicago holding the No. 14 overall pick, unable to secure the kind of lottery breakthrough that can dramatically reshape a franchise’s future.
The event, held at McCormick Place, ultimately favored the Washington Wizards, who captured the No. 1 pick despite sharing the same 14 percent odds as several other teams near the top of the lottery standings. Charlotte, meanwhile, remained in its projected position and will now turn its attention toward maximizing value later in the first round.
Representing the Hornets during the lottery was rising star Kon Knueppel, whose presence brought both optimism and humor to the evening. The 20-year-old guard-forward reflected on the experience afterward, joking about his failed attempts to predict a better outcome through repeated lottery simulations during the drive to the event.
Although Charlotte did not receive the result it hoped for, the organization still enters the offseason with considerable momentum. The Hornets showed major progress throughout the past year and narrowly missed ending the NBA’s longest active playoff drought, leaving many around the league believing the franchise may finally be turning a corner.
1. Lottery Results Bring Mixed Emotions
Charlotte’s disappointment was understandable given the stakes associated with the NBA Draft lottery. Teams entering the event often dream of securing a transformative talent capable of accelerating a rebuild or elevating a competitive roster into postseason contention. For the Hornets, the opportunity carried extra significance because of the strength of this year’s draft class. Several highly regarded prospects are expected to enter the league with immediate impact potential, making movement into the top selections especially valuable for franchises seeking cornerstone players. Still, the odds never strongly favored Charlotte. The team entered the lottery without the statistical advantage enjoyed by clubs near the bottom of the standings. Ultimately, the Wizards emerged victorious, claiming the top pick ahead of teams such as the Brooklyn Nets and Indiana Pacers, who also carried strong lottery odds. Knueppel addressed the result with a lighthearted perspective afterward. Speaking in a video later shared online, he admitted he had already tempered expectations before arriving in Chicago. According to Knueppel, dozens of simulated lottery attempts during the trip from Milwaukee produced the same outcome repeatedly — no movement up the board for Charlotte.
2. Knueppel Emerging as Franchise Cornerstone
Although the lottery did not go Charlotte’s way, the organization already possesses one of the league’s most promising young players in Knueppel. The former No. 4 overall pick quickly became a major contributor during his rookie season and played a critical role in the Hornets’ surprising rise in the standings. Knueppel averaged 18.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists while showing maturity well beyond his age. His scoring versatility, decision-making, and competitive approach helped stabilize the Hornets throughout the season, particularly during stretches when the team faced injuries and inconsistency elsewhere on the roster. The rookie’s production also earned widespread recognition across the league. Knueppel finished as the runner-up in Rookie of the Year voting behind Dallas Mavericks standout Cooper Flagg, further solidifying his reputation as one of the foundational young talents in the NBA. Beyond his on-court performance, Knueppel has already embraced a leadership role within the organization. Even after the disappointing lottery outcome, he emphasized the importance of continuing to add competitive players capable of helping the Hornets sustain their progress. His comments reflected the growing confidence surrounding Charlotte’s direction after years of instability.
3. Charlotte Eyes Next Step Forward
The Hornets’ 44-38 record last season represented one of the franchise’s strongest campaigns in nearly a decade. Charlotte narrowly missed qualifying for the playoffs after losing to the Orlando Magic in the Play-In Tournament, falling just one victory short of ending a nine-year postseason absence. Despite the disappointing finish, the season marked a major improvement for a team that had struggled to establish consistency in recent years. Charlotte displayed better defensive intensity, improved roster chemistry, and a stronger overall identity under pressure situations throughout the season. The No. 14 pick may not carry the excitement of a top-three selection, but the Hornets still believe they can secure a valuable contributor in what many scouts consider a deep draft class. Front offices across the league have noted the overall talent depth available this year, particularly among wings and versatile perimeter players. Charlotte’s history in the draft also serves as a reminder that lottery success is never guaranteed. The franchise has only won the No. 1 overall pick once, selecting Larry Johnson in 1991. More than three decades later, the Hornets once again missed out on the top selection, but the organization appears far better positioned than in previous rebuilding cycles. With Knueppel continuing to develop and the roster already showing meaningful progress, Charlotte enters the offseason focused less on disappointment and more on sustaining momentum.
