Houston Cougars backup quarterback Zeon Chriss-Gremillion confirmed Wednesday that he will enter the NCAA transfer portal during the January 2–16 window. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana native announced the move via social media, noting that he has one season of collegiate eligibility remaining.
Chriss-Gremillion joined Houston in 2024 after two seasons at Louisiana, where he appeared in 12 games, starting six, and threw for 1,331 yards with 12 passing touchdowns. At Houston, he played in 11 games as a sophomore, including seven starts, completing 93 of 151 passes for 932 yards and five touchdowns, while adding 467 rushing yards and four scores.
He also made program history against Kansas State by becoming the first Houston quarterback to complete all of his passes in a single game with a minimum of 10 attempts. That feat is rare nationally, achieved by just 23 FBS quarterbacks since 1996, including 13 underclassmen.
Chriss-Gremillion’s dual-threat ability was a hallmark of his time at Houston, providing both rushing and passing production. Even in limited opportunities, he demonstrated explosiveness and playmaking that could appeal to programs in need of a versatile quarterback.
1. Dual-Threat Production
Throughout his tenure at Houston, Chriss-Gremillion showcased his ability to make plays with both his arm and legs. In 2024, he led the team with four rushing touchdowns and totaled 388 rushing yards, ranking seventh among Power Four underclassmen quarterbacks. He forced 35 missed tackles, ranking fifth among Power Four QBs that season. His standout rushing performance came at TCU, where he ran for 97 yards, including a 71-yard run—the longest by any Big 12 quarterback that year. He also displayed passing ability, such as his 191-yard effort at Arizona, featuring a 57-yard completion. Despite a diminished role in 2025 due to returning starter Conner Weigman, Chriss-Gremillion made the most of limited opportunities. He completed 15 of 18 passes with a touchdown and rushed for 97 yards against TCU, then connected on a 64-yard touchdown pass to Amare Thomas versus Texas Tech. His combination of rushing and passing ability makes him a compelling option for programs seeking a dual-threat quarterback capable of creating explosive plays in the open field.
2. Background and Early Career
A product of Madison Prep Academy, Chriss-Gremillion was rated a three-star recruit, ranked No. 78 nationally among quarterbacks and No. 53 in Louisiana for the class of 2022. During his high school career, he completed 183 of 339 passes for 2,954 yards with 45 touchdowns and added 629 rushing yards with eight scores. His experience at two programs and success as a dual-threat quarterback provide him with both versatility and college-level experience, assets that could help him compete for a starting role immediately at his next destination. Chriss-Gremillion is one of five Houston players entering the transfer portal this offseason, alongside linebackers Zion Taylor and Jesus Machado, and defensive linemen Joshua Donald and Zavian Tibbs. With the program bringing in the No. 1 quarterback recruit in the 2026 class, Keisean Henderson, Chriss-Gremillion faces limited playing opportunities next season. The transfer portal provides him a chance to find a program where he can compete for significant snaps, showcasing his dual-threat skill set and building on the success he has demonstrated at Houston and Louisiana.
3. Portal Outlook and Next Steps
Given his experience and versatility, Chriss-Gremillion is expected to attract interest from multiple programs seeking a dynamic quarterback. His ability to run and throw effectively offers an immediate impact option for teams in need of a starter. With one year of eligibility remaining, he has a narrow but valuable window to prove himself and potentially lead a team as the starting quarterback. Programs in both the Power Five and Group of Five conferences could view him as a high-upside acquisition. Chriss-Gremillion’s decision also reflects the evolving nature of college football, where transfer opportunities allow athletes to seek better playing time and fit within different offensive schemes. His move could set the stage for a productive final collegiate season. For Houston, losing Chriss-Gremillion is mitigated by the arrival of elite freshman quarterback Keisean Henderson, but it represents another roster shift as the program continues to adjust personnel for the 2026 season.
