The Houston Cougars continue to stand firmly behind head coach Kelvin Sampson following their Sweet 16 loss to Illinois, even as the program enters a pivotal offseason. Despite the disappointment, Houston’s rise into a national contender under Sampson has solidified long-term confidence in his leadership.
At 71 years old during the 2026–27 season, Sampson remains focused on capturing his first national championship, a goal that still eludes an otherwise decorated coaching career. The Cougars, meanwhile, are working to sustain their competitive window while navigating significant roster turnover.
That transition includes the departure of key young talent, with freshman Kingston Flemings declaring for the NBA Draft and former five-star recruit Isiah Harwell transferring to Gonzaga Bulldogs. In response, Houston has already acted in the transfer portal, adding former UNLV and LSU guard Dedan Thomas Jr..
Still, roster gaps remain—particularly in the frontcourt, where Houston is now searching for additional size and physical presence to complement its guard-heavy rebuild.
1. Frontcourt Need Becomes A Priority
Houston’s offseason attention has increasingly turned to the center position, where depth and physicality remain key concerns. With several top big men already off the board in the transfer portal, the market for impact frontcourt players is quickly shrinking. Former Big 12 rival Flory Bidunga has already committed to Louisville, while Arizona State’s Massamba Diop is trending toward a move to St. John’s. Another option, Somto Cyril, recently landed at Miami, further limiting available choices. That scarcity has increased pressure on Houston to identify remaining contributors who can fill the void. The Cougars are not just looking for scoring, but for rebounding, rim protection, and toughness in the paint. As a result, attention has shifted toward less conventional targets who may not be elite shot blockers but can still provide stability and physical presence in the frontcourt rotation.
2. Najai Hines Emerges As A Target
One name gaining traction is Seton Hall transfer Najai Hines, a four-star center from the Big East. While not the tallest or most dominant rim protector available, Hines brings a different kind of value. Built with a strong frame and physical playing style, Hines is known for finishing through contact and playing with consistent interior aggression. At 6-foot-10 and 265 pounds, he offers the type of size that can withstand the physical demands of high-level competition. During his time at Seton Hall Pirates, Hines averaged 6.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. While those numbers are modest, they reflect a steady interior contributor rather than a focal scoring option. He also showed flashes against top-tier competition, recording three of his four double-doubles against Big East opponents, including a strong performance against UConn. Those outings highlight his potential value when placed in a structured system.
3. Fit Within Houston’s System
Houston’s interest in Hines is rooted in fit rather than pure production. Sampson’s system emphasizes toughness, rebounding, and defensive discipline—traits that align with Hines’ style of play. The Cougars have previously thrived with physical frontcourts, using interior strength to complement disciplined perimeter play. That formula helped them compete with programs like Arizona and Texas Tech in recent seasons, and it remains central to their identity. While Hines is not viewed as a high-level scoring threat—never surpassing 12 points in a single game—his role would not require offensive dominance. Instead, his value lies in screening, rebounding, and finishing plays around the rim. With Houston coming off a loss that exposed frontcourt limitations, the need for additional size is clear. Hines represents one of the more viable remaining options who can contribute immediately while fitting the program’s demanding style.
