During Super Bowl week, a former Patriots quarterback took the microphone and offered a candid assessment of his time with one of the NFL’s most scrutinized franchises.

Speaking on WEEI Radio, he relayed his experience with the organization, explaining that he believed he deserved more respect and a clearer path on the depth chart after the team made lineup changes during the 2024 season.

The criticism was centered on a single theme. Practices, effort, and readiness were not the issues in his view.

Instead, how the team managed roles and communicated with players shaped his belief that he was not treated fairly. That perception is now part of the narrative surrounding his departure from New England.

1. Feeling Overlooked in the QB Room

The quarterback entered the Patriots’ 2024 season amid a crowded competition at the position that included a veteran starter and a high-draft rookie.

When the team flipped the depth chart in favor of the rookie, the veteran remained at No. 2 while the quarterback felt his own role should have been elevated given his practice reps and performance. In his telling, that disconnect created tension.

He explained that during practice he was throwing the ball with confidence and intensity, reflecting his belief in his game.

He recounted a deep ball he completed over a top Patriots defender that he viewed as a moment where his play should have demanded acknowledgement. Instead, he said the staff simply observed and did not reward it with a promotion on the roster.

2. A Sense of Disrespect That Grew Over Time

The quarterback acknowledged that the situation was not dramatic. He did not describe a single explosive moment that caused a rift.

Instead, he said the disrespect came as a slow buildup, rooted in a lack of clarity and communication about his role. He felt that the organization did not provide him with the opportunity to grow through meaningful reps, despite practicing actively and demonstrating effort reflective of his competitive nature.

That sense of being left on the outside looking in became a factor in his decision to request a trade. Rather than remain in a situation where he felt stagnant, he chose to pursue a new opportunity.

The Patriots ultimately traded him to the Cowboys, where he has carved out a backup role.

3. Reset With a New Team

Since joining Dallas, the quarterback has had limited playing time, appearing in a handful of games and contributing modestly in action.

While the statistical output has been limited, the new environment has provided him with a fresh start and a clearer understanding of his place within a roster. That reset may be exactly what he needed after a turbulent conclusion to his time in New England.

His comments this week reflect an athlete who is still processing a formative chapter of his career and defining how he wants to be perceived moving forward.

Every NFL story includes triumphs, setbacks, and moments of transition. In this case, a brief stint with the Patriots ended with hard feelings and public reflection. Whether that will shape how the quarterback is viewed long term remains to be seen. For now, his willingness to speak openly about feeling disrespected puts a spotlight on the human side of roster decisions and how they impact the players involved.
