The Indiana Hoosiers continued an active roster rebuild on Tuesday with a significant addition in the transfer portal, securing the commitment of Turkish center Samet Yigitoglu. The move represents another step in the program’s effort to reshape its roster for the 2026–27 season.

Yigitoglu arrives from SMU Mustangs, bringing immediate size and interior presence to a Hoosiers team that has been seeking a reliable anchor in the paint. At 7-foot-2, he adds one of the most physically imposing frames available in the transfer market.

His arrival addresses a clear roster need for Indiana, which has been working to balance a lineup that previously leaned heavily on perimeter scoring and guard play. The addition gives the Hoosiers a more traditional interior option on both ends of the floor.

The commitment also underscores Indiana’s broader strategy in the transfer portal: prioritizing experienced, productive players capable of contributing immediately in Big Ten competition.

1. Proven Production in the Frontcourt

Yigitoglu brings established production from his time at SMU, where he developed into a consistent interior threat. During the 2025–26 season, he averaged 10.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game. He was one of the most efficient big men in his conference, shooting 62.8% from the field. That efficiency came largely from high-percentage finishes around the rim and strong positioning in the paint. His ability to convert at a high rate makes him a reliable offensive option, particularly in half-court sets where interior scoring becomes critical. He does not require high usage to impact games, which increases his fit in structured systems. Beyond scoring, his rebounding and defensive presence helped stabilize SMU’s frontcourt throughout the season.

2. Rim Protection and Two-Way Impact

Defensively, Yigitoglu’s length and timing give Indiana an immediate rim-protecting presence. His 1.3 blocks per game reflect consistent deterrence at the basket. He alters shots even when not recording blocks, using his size to force opponents into difficult finishes in the paint. That type of interior disruption has been a missing element in Indiana’s recent rotations. His defensive impact is expected to be particularly valuable in Big Ten play, where physical frontcourt battles often determine outcomes. Adding a player with proven shot-altering ability helps address a long-standing roster concern. Offensively, his finishing ability complements his defensive skill set, making him a legitimate two-way contributor rather than a one-dimensional role player.

3. A Key Piece in Indiana’s Roster Reset

The addition of Yigitoglu signals a clear direction in Indiana’s roster construction under its current rebuild approach. The program has prioritized size, interior toughness, and proven college production in the portal. That strategy reflects the realities of modern Big Ten competition, where depth and physicality in the frontcourt remain essential for sustained success. Indiana’s coaching staff has emphasized addressing those areas early in the offseason. His arrival also helps restore balance to a roster that previously skewed toward perimeter-heavy lineups, giving the Hoosiers more versatility in lineup construction. With a more complete interior presence now in place, Indiana appears better positioned to compete physically and defensively as it looks to climb the Big Ten standings.
