The Indiana Pacers are approaching the final stretch of the 2025–26 NBA season under difficult circumstances, with injuries, losses, and draft implications all shaping the outlook for the franchise. As the season winds down, the team’s struggles on the court could have significant long-term consequences due to the conditions attached to a previous trade involving center Ivica Zubac.

Indiana’s 2026 first-round pick is protected only within a specific range, meaning the team could lose the selection to the Los Angeles Clippers if it lands between picks five and nine. That unusual scenario has created an incentive structure that complicates the Pacers’ approach to the remainder of the season.

On Sunday night, the Pacers suffered another setback in a 131–111 road loss to the Portland Trail Blazers. The defeat was compounded by additional injury concerns, as guard TJ McConnell left the game with a hamstring issue while forward Jarace Walker appeared to twist his ankle late in the contest.

Head coach Rick Carlisle acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the team’s health after the game. With several players already sidelined throughout the season, the Pacers now face another round of evaluations as they attempt to manage a roster that has rarely been at full strength.

1. A Season Defined by Injuries

Few teams in the league have been hit by injuries as consistently as the Pacers this season. From early in the campaign, Indiana has struggled to maintain lineup stability, with multiple key players missing extended stretches of time. Guard Andrew Nembhard, wing Aaron Nesmith, and forward Obi Toppin have all spent time sidelined, disrupting the team’s rotations and forcing younger players into larger roles. The absence of these contributors has made it difficult for Indiana to establish continuity on both ends of the floor. The situation worsened during the loss to Portland when TJ McConnell and Jarace Walker both suffered injuries. McConnell exited with a hamstring problem, while Walker appeared to turn his ankle in the closing moments of the game. Carlisle addressed the situation cautiously after the game, noting that the team would need to evaluate both players before determining the severity of their injuries. For a roster already dealing with significant setbacks, any additional absences could further complicate the remainder of the season.

2. A Challenging Record

The accumulation of injuries has translated directly into the Pacers’ record. Entering March, Indiana sits at 15–49, one of the lowest marks in the league and a stark contrast to expectations at the beginning of the season. While some anticipated that the team might struggle without star guard Tyrese Haliburton, few predicted the extent of the downturn. The Pacers were expected to remain at least moderately competitive, similar to other teams that have managed to stay afloat despite missing key players. Instead, the season has turned into what many around the organization now view as a difficult transitional year. Without their full complement of talent and with constant lineup adjustments, the Pacers have struggled to maintain consistent performance. The team’s losses have also placed them near the bottom of the league standings. While that position reflects the challenges they have faced, it also introduces important considerations related to their draft position and long-term roster planning.

3. Draft Implications and the Road Ahead

The Pacers’ draft situation adds a unique dimension to their current struggles. Due to the terms of the Ivica Zubac trade, Indiana’s 2026 first-round pick will go to the Los Angeles Clippers if it lands between selections five and nine. This creates an unusual scenario in which the team’s final standing could determine whether they retain or lose their pick. If the selection falls outside that protected range, the Pacers would keep it, potentially gaining access to a valuable prospect. For a franchise in the midst of a challenging season, the possibility of securing a high-level draft pick could provide a silver lining. A strong addition in the upcoming draft might help accelerate the team’s rebuilding process and complement its existing young core. In the meantime, Indiana must navigate the final portion of the schedule with a depleted roster and uncertain health outlook. While the short-term results may remain difficult, the organization will likely focus on development and long-term planning as it looks ahead to future seasons.
