The Iowa State Cyclones are undergoing a significant roster reset following a successful 2026 season that ended in a Sweet 16 appearance. With departures and eligibility losses impacting the lineup, head coach T.J. Otzelberger has turned heavily to the transfer portal to maintain momentum.
One of the latest additions is guard Ryan Prather Jr., who arrives from Robert Morris Colonials after a breakout junior campaign. His commitment marks Iowa State’s fifth portal addition of the offseason, signaling an aggressive approach to roster building.
Prather enters the program as a proven scorer, coming off a season in which he earned All-Horizon League honors. His offensive production and versatility give the Cyclones another experienced perimeter option heading into the new year.
The move also reflects Iowa State’s broader strategy of targeting players who have developed through multiple levels of college basketball, prioritizing both immediate impact and long-term growth.
1. Breakout Season In The Horizon League
Prather enjoyed a career-defining season at Robert Morris, where he emerged as one of the league’s most productive guards. He averaged 15.7 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game while shooting nearly 37 percent from three-point range. His ability to score in bunches became a key feature of his game. Prather recorded nine games with at least 20 points, including a standout 29-point performance against Detroit Mercy. He also delivered in postseason play, scoring 24 points in a Horizon League Tournament matchup against Youngstown State. Those performances highlighted his ability to rise to the occasion in meaningful games. That consistency and scoring versatility helped elevate his profile, making him a sought-after transfer target for high-major programs looking for immediate backcourt help.
2. Development Journey And Growth
Prather’s path to becoming a key contributor was not immediate. He began his collegiate career at Akron Zips, where he redshirted during the 2022–23 season before seeing limited action the following year. In his early collegiate appearances, he played sparingly, averaging just 5.1 minutes per game across 15 contests. That limited role eventually led him to seek a larger opportunity elsewhere. His transfer to Robert Morris marked a turning point. In his first season with the Colonials, he earned a starting role in 12 games and steadily increased his production, setting the stage for his breakout junior year. The progression reflects a player who has steadily adapted and improved, gaining confidence and responsibility at each stop in his college career.
3. Iowa State’s Portal Strategy And Outlook
Prather joins a Cyclones program that has been active and methodical in the transfer portal. Iowa State hosted multiple visitors this offseason as it looked to replace key departures, including forward Milan Momcilovic, who declared for the NBA Draft. Other incoming transfers joining Prather include Leon Bond (Northern Iowa), Taj Manning (Kansas State), JaQuan Johnson (Bradley), and Tre Singleton (Northwestern). The group reflects a wide-ranging effort to reinforce multiple positions. The Cyclones’ Sweet 16 run in 2026 set a high bar for the program, but maintaining that success will require immediate contributions from newcomers. Prather’s scoring ability and experience make him a strong candidate to help fill that gap. For Otzelberger and his staff, the focus now shifts to integrating a largely new roster while preserving the defensive identity and competitiveness that defined last season’s success.
