Jacksonville enters the final week of the regular season with its clearest path yet to reclaim control of the AFC South. At 12–4, the Jaguars need only a home win Sunday against the Tennessee Titans to clinch the division, their first since the 2022 season.

The stakes, however, are heightened by the Houston Texans’ late surge. After stumbling early in the year, Houston has won its way back into the race and now trails Jacksonville by a single game, making any slip by the Jaguars potentially costly.

Against that backdrop, the organization made a significant commitment to its future on Friday night, agreeing to a three-year, $51 million extension with offensive tackle Cole Van Lanen, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

The move signals that while Jacksonville’s focus is firmly on finishing the job this season, the front office is also intent on ensuring the core pieces around quarterback Trevor Lawrence remain intact well beyond this playoff push.

1. Van Lanen’s Breakout Season

Cole Van Lanen was once viewed as a depth lineman with upside rather than a cornerstone player. This season, he has changed that narrative, emerging as Lawrence’s primary blindside protector and one of the most reliable pieces on the offensive line. The new contract — averaging $17 million per year — reflects both production and projection. Jacksonville is betting that Van Lanen’s steady rise is sustainable rather than a one-year spike, while still protecting itself with a three-year term instead of a longer, riskier commitment. In a league where elite tackle play is both scarce and expensive, the Jaguars opted to move early rather than let a breakout season turn into a bidding war on the open market. For Lawrence, who has endured uneven protection at times early in his career, the stability at left tackle could prove invaluable as Jacksonville attempts to evolve from division contender to legitimate conference threat.

2. Coen’s First-Year Impact

This season has marked a significant cultural and tactical shift in Jacksonville under first-year head coach Liam Coen. Hired to inject energy and modern concepts into a talented but inconsistent roster, Coen has delivered results almost immediately. After a surprising Week 2 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, the Jaguars regrouped and ripped off seven consecutive wins, climbing from early uncertainty to the top of the AFC South standings. Players across the roster have taken noticeable steps forward, and Van Lanen is perhaps the most prominent example of that development. His growth mirrors a broader trend of young contributors finding consistency within Coen’s scheme. Coen’s emphasis on tempo, spacing, and situational efficiency has helped Jacksonville overcome injuries and maintain balance, even as the pressure of a division race intensified.

3. Gladstone’s Blueprint

The Jaguars’ resurgence is not solely a product of the coaching staff. General manager James Gladstone, hired alongside Coen, has wasted little time reshaping the roster to match the new vision. Gladstone targeted players with versatility and upside, aiming to build a team capable of sustaining success rather than peaking briefly. The Van Lanen extension fits neatly into that philosophy, locking in a player entering his prime rather than paying a premium later. The approach has created a roster that feels both youthful and battle-tested, a rare combination for a team that was searching for its identity not long ago. As the Jaguars prepare for their regular-season finale, there is a growing belief inside the building that this season is not an endpoint but a foundation — the first real glimpse of what a fully realized Gladstone-Coen partnership could become.
