The Jacksonville Jaguars continued one of the NFL’s most dramatic late-season turnarounds with a convincing 34–20 victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 16, their sixth straight win and another statement in a crowded AFC playoff race.

Hours later, the celebration carried into Monday night when the Indianapolis Colts fell, officially securing Jacksonville a playoff spot for the first time in years and validating a surge that has reshaped the AFC South landscape.

Yet even as the Jaguars basked in momentum, the week delivered sobering news. Veteran defensive back Jourdan Lewis underwent foot surgery and will miss the remainder of the season, a significant loss for a defense that has thrived on cohesion and timely playmaking.

Head coach Liam Coen emphasized that Lewis’ influence will not disappear with his season-ending injury, insisting the ninth-year veteran remains integral to Jacksonville’s postseason push through leadership and mentorship from the sideline.

1. A Team Catching Fire

The Jaguars’ win over Denver reflected the confidence of a team that has discovered its identity in December. Offensively, Jacksonville executed with balance and poise, controlling the tempo and capitalizing on Broncos mistakes. Defensively, the unit again delivered in critical moments, forcing turnovers and limiting Denver’s ability to build sustained drives. That consistency has become the Jaguars’ calling card during their winning streak. The result pushed Jacksonville to 11–4, its first 11-win season since 2007, and reinforced the notion that this roster is peaking at precisely the right time. More importantly, the Jaguars no longer look like a fringe contender. With six straight victories, they have turned a midseason question mark into one of the AFC’s most dangerous teams entering the final two weeks.

2. Losing a Locker-Room Anchor

Jourdan Lewis’ injury is more than a hit to the depth chart. The veteran cornerback was signed to a three-year, $30 million contract in the offseason with the expectation that he would stabilize the secondary and bring championship-caliber professionalism. Lewis delivered immediately, earning strong coverage grades in his first season in Jacksonville and becoming a trusted presence for younger defensive backs adjusting to expanded roles. Coen acknowledged the void his absence creates but stressed that Lewis has already made an impact since undergoing surgery. “He’ll definitely help us,” Coen said, noting the trust Lewis commands within the locker room. According to the coaching staff, Lewis has maintained his energy and engagement, offering guidance to players in the defensive backfield and ensuring standards remain high as the team navigates the postseason.

3. From Dallas to Jacksonville

Lewis arrived in Jacksonville after spending the first eight seasons of his career with the Dallas Cowboys, where he was drafted in the third round in 2017 and steadily carved out a reputation as a reliable cover corner. The Jaguars targeted him in free agency not just for his on-field production, but for his experience in big moments and his ability to elevate a secondary still searching for a consistent voice. That transition was seamless. Lewis quickly earned the respect of teammates and coaches alike, becoming a fixture in defensive meetings and on game day. Now, while he won’t be able to take the field again this season, Jacksonville is determined to extract every ounce of value from his presence as the playoffs approach.
