For most of Tuesday night, the Cleveland Cavaliers appeared to have complete control of Game 1 against the New York Knicks. Cleveland built a large second-half lead and looked prepared to steal a road victory at Madison Square Garden while putting early pressure on New York in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Knicks, meanwhile, struggled to find consistency offensively through much of regulation. Poor perimeter shooting, sloppy possessions, and long stretches without rhythm left the home crowd frustrated as Cleveland steadily increased its advantage heading into the fourth quarter.

But the entire game shifted once Jalen Brunson took over late. The Knicks guard aggressively attacked the Cavaliers’ defense and sparked one of the most dramatic postseason comebacks in recent memory. New York erased a 22-point deficit before securing a 115-104 overtime victory and a 1-0 series lead.

As the fallout from the loss spread across social media and television analysis, much of the criticism centered on veteran guard James Harden. Analysts and fans questioned both his defensive effort and offensive efficiency during the collapse, with former NFL linebacker and television personality Emmanuel Acho delivering some of the sharpest comments after the game.

1. Brunson Leads Knicks’ Furious Comeback

Brunson delivered another standout postseason performance, finishing with 38 points, six assists, five rebounds, and three steals while shooting efficiently throughout the game. His scoring surge in the fourth quarter completely altered the momentum and energized a Knicks team that had appeared overmatched earlier in the night. The All-Star guard repeatedly targeted Cleveland defenders in isolation situations, attacking gaps in the defense and creating opportunities both for himself and his teammates. His ability to control tempo and maintain composure became the foundation of New York’s comeback. One of the most important moments came late in regulation when Brunson drove past Harden for a crucial basket that helped force overtime. The play immediately became a focal point of postgame discussion as critics highlighted Cleveland’s inability to contain New York’s top scorer in the closing minutes. Once overtime began, the Knicks maintained full control. Cleveland struggled to recover emotionally after losing its large lead, while New York continued playing with confidence and energy. The Cavaliers were outscored decisively down the stretch as the Knicks completed the comeback in front of a roaring Madison Square Garden crowd.

2. Emmanuel Acho Delivers Strong Criticism

Following the game, Acho strongly criticized Harden’s performance during an appearance on his talk show. The former NFL player and analyst described Cleveland’s defeat as a catastrophic collapse and argued that Harden’s struggles played a major role in the outcome. Acho focused heavily on Harden’s defensive issues against Brunson, criticizing the veteran guard for failing to slow down New York’s offensive leader during critical possessions. His comments reflected frustrations shared by many Cavaliers fans after watching the fourth-quarter meltdown unfold. Harden’s offensive production also drew scrutiny. The veteran guard finished with 15 points while shooting just over 31 percent from the field. He also committed six turnovers and missed two free throws, continuing a stretch of inconsistent postseason performances that have repeatedly drawn criticism throughout his career. Defensively, Harden struggled to contain penetration and frequently appeared outmatched during New York’s comeback run. Although he recorded a steal and a block, critics argued that his overall defensive presence was ineffective during the most important moments of the game.

3. Cavaliers Search for Answers Before Game 2

While Harden became the primary target of criticism, Cleveland’s collapse was not caused by one player alone. Several Cavaliers contributors struggled late in the game as the Knicks steadily erased the deficit and took control emotionally. Evan Mobley contributed defensively but shot only 6-for-16 from the field, while Jarrett Allen had difficulty making consistent impact plays late in regulation. Dennis Schroder also endured a difficult shooting performance, making only one of his nine attempts from the floor. Donovan Mitchell led Cleveland with 29 points and six steals, but even he faded offensively during the closing stretch. The Cavaliers’ ball movement slowed significantly late in the fourth quarter, and the offense became increasingly reliant on isolation plays rather than the fast-paced attack that helped build the lead. Now Cleveland faces the challenge of regrouping quickly before Game 2. The Cavaliers must determine how to defend Brunson more effectively while also managing expectations surrounding Harden, who at 36 years old continues to face enormous pressure to deliver in high-stakes postseason moments despite an inconsistent playoff reputation.
