When the Philadelphia 76ers traded Jared McCain at the 2026 NBA Trade Deadline, criticism arrived almost immediately. Many fans questioned why the organization would move on from a young player who had already shown flashes of becoming an important contributor before injuries interrupted his rookie season.

McCain had impressed early in the year with his scoring ability, confidence, and offensive versatility before suffering a meniscus tear that cut his campaign short. Despite the injury setback, many around the league still viewed the former first-round pick as a valuable long-term piece for Philadelphia.

Former 76ers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey defended the decision by explaining that the organization believed it was “selling high” on McCain’s value. The front office also appeared confident that the arrival of rookie guard VJ Edgecombe would help soften the loss and strengthen the team’s future direction.

Several months later, however, McCain’s continued development with the Oklahoma City Thunder has reignited debate around the trade. His latest playoff performance in the Western Conference Finals only added to growing questions about whether Philadelphia moved on from the young guard too early.

1. McCain Delivers on Playoff Stage

McCain entered Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals with increased responsibility after Oklahoma City adjusted its lineup because of injuries. Thunder coach Mark Daigneault decided to insert the young guard into the starting lineup for the first postseason start of his career. The move quickly paid off. McCain responded with one of his most important performances of the season, finishing with 20 points and three rebounds in Oklahoma City’s victory over the San Antonio Spurs. He played with confidence throughout the night and provided valuable scoring during key stretches of the game. One sequence early in the third quarter particularly stood out. As the Spurs attempted to regain momentum, McCain helped fuel a scoring run that allowed the Thunder to maintain control. His energy and shot-making prevented San Antonio from closing the gap and shifted momentum back toward Oklahoma City. Daigneault later explained that the coaching staff believed McCain could provide an immediate spark despite his limited playoff experience. The Thunder coach praised both his energy and composure, noting that McCain remained effective throughout the game after getting off to a strong start.

2. Morey’s Comments Continue to Follow Trade

The trade itself became even more controversial because of Morey’s public explanation afterward. Rather than framing the move strictly as a roster adjustment, the longtime executive openly suggested that Philadelphia believed McCain’s value may never be higher than it was at the time of the trade. Morey stated that he felt “quite confident” the organization was selling high on the young guard. The comment immediately became a talking point among fans and analysts because it implied the 76ers doubted McCain’s long-term trajectory despite his early success. So far, McCain’s performances have made those remarks increasingly difficult to defend publicly. Since joining Oklahoma City, the guard has continued to develop into a reliable contributor on a championship contender. His ability to impact playoff games has only strengthened the perception that the Thunder acquired a valuable young piece. The situation also highlights the risk teams face when evaluating injured young players. McCain’s meniscus tear created uncertainty about his future, but Oklahoma City clearly believed his skill set and upside outweighed any short-term concerns. The Thunder’s confidence now appears to be paying off at one of the most important moments of the season.

3. Philadelphia Left Wondering What Could Have Been

To Philadelphia’s credit, the season was not without success. The 76ers showed resilience during the playoffs, most notably by overcoming a 3-1 deficit against the Boston Celtics in the opening round. That comeback demonstrated the team’s toughness and ability to respond under pressure. Still, the postseason ended abruptly in the next round when the New York Knicks swept the 76ers out of the playoffs. Philadelphia struggled to consistently generate offense during portions of the series, particularly from the perimeter and secondary scoring positions. Those struggles naturally led to more discussion surrounding McCain’s absence. His shot creation, energy, and perimeter scoring could have addressed some of the offensive problems the 76ers encountered against New York. While there is no guarantee he would have changed the outcome, his skill set may have provided additional flexibility for the rotation. For Oklahoma City, meanwhile, McCain has become another example of the organization’s strong developmental system and depth. The Thunder continue to receive meaningful contributions from young players throughout their roster, and McCain’s emergence has added another dimension to their championship pursuit.
