The Cleveland Cavaliers entered Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals hoping to rebound from the disappointment of their collapse in the series opener. Instead, the Cavaliers suffered another difficult loss Thursday night, falling 109-93 to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.

The defeat pushed Cleveland into a challenging 0-2 hole as the series shifts back to Ohio. Despite moments of competitiveness early in the game, the Cavaliers once again struggled to contain New York’s balanced offense and physical style during the second half.

One of the key storylines from the game centered around Knicks guard Josh Hart, whose outside shooting played a major role in New York’s victory. Cleveland’s defensive strategy largely focused on limiting the impact of other scorers by giving Hart additional perimeter space, betting that his streaky shooting tendencies would eventually work in their favor.

That approach backfired in Game 2 as Hart delivered one of his strongest postseason performances. Still, Cavaliers center Jarrett Allen made it clear after the game that he remains confident in the team’s defensive philosophy and trusts the coaching staff’s overall strategy moving forward.

1. Hart Punishes Cleveland’s Defensive Gamble

The Cavaliers entered the matchup with a clear defensive objective: limit driving lanes, protect the paint, and force Hart into becoming more of a perimeter scorer. Historically, Hart has experienced inconsistency from three-point range, making him a calculated risk within New York’s offense. In Game 1, the strategy produced reasonable results. Hart struggled to find rhythm from deep, and Cleveland largely succeeded in preventing him from becoming a major offensive factor. That outcome reinforced the Cavaliers’ belief that the defensive approach remained sound heading into Game 2. However, the Knicks guard responded aggressively in the second contest. Hart connected on five of his 11 three-point attempts and repeatedly capitalized on open looks created by Cleveland’s defensive rotations and focus on Jalen Brunson. His shooting gave New York another offensive dimension and helped fuel several momentum-shifting runs throughout the game. Every time Cleveland attempted to tighten defensively elsewhere, Hart made the Cavaliers pay by knocking down timely perimeter shots that energized the home crowd and widened the scoring gap.

2. Allen Maintains Confidence in Cavaliers’ Approach

Despite Hart’s success, Allen refused to criticize the team’s defensive decisions afterward. Instead, the Cavaliers center acknowledged that difficult outcomes are sometimes part of playoff basketball, especially against talented NBA players capable of adjusting from game to game. Allen emphasized that Cleveland’s strategy was built on statistical tendencies and the coaching staff’s preparation rather than emotion or guesswork. From his perspective, sticking with the plan remains important even after one difficult performance from Hart. The veteran center also credited Hart for taking advantage of the opportunities available to him. According to Allen, the Knicks guard deserves recognition for changing the game through his outside shooting after being less effective from distance earlier in the series. Allen’s comments reflected a broader sense of trust within Cleveland’s locker room despite the disappointing results. The Cavaliers continue to believe their overall system can work if executed more consistently, particularly as the series now shifts back to their home floor for Game 3.

3. Cavaliers Face Pressure Returning Home

While Cleveland remains confident internally, the reality of the situation has become increasingly urgent. Falling behind 0-2 in the conference finals places enormous pressure on the Cavaliers heading into the next stage of the series. The team showed signs of resilience early in Game 2 while attempting to recover from the emotional impact of its Game 1 collapse. However, New York repeatedly answered Cleveland’s pushes with scoring runs of its own, including a decisive 18-0 stretch that effectively changed the direction of the contest. Several Cavaliers still produced respectable individual performances despite the loss. Donovan Mitchell led the team with 26 points and four rebounds, while James Harden contributed 18 points and six rebounds. Allen added 13 points, 10 rebounds, and two blocked shots, and Evan Mobley chipped in 14 points and six rebounds. Now, the Cavaliers must quickly regroup before Game 3 at Rocket Arena. Another loss would leave Cleveland facing a nearly impossible comeback situation, making the upcoming matchup one of the most important games the franchise has played since returning to championship contention.
