The Boston Celtics made one of the most surprising moves of the NBA offseason by trading Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for veteran forward Paul George, two first-round draft picks, and two second-round selections. The blockbuster deal immediately sparked debate across the league, with many questioning whether Boston received enough value for a player who helped lead the franchise to an NBA championship.

Brown had established himself as one of the league’s premier two-way wings and was instrumental in Boston’s success over recent seasons. Because of his accomplishments and the reported interest from multiple teams, some observers believed the Celtics could have negotiated a larger return.

Despite those reactions, Boston’s front office reportedly felt the timing was right to make a significant change. Reports suggested the organization had growing concerns surrounding Brown’s long-term fit and believed it was in the franchise’s best interest to reshape the roster before those issues became more difficult to manage.

Among those supporting the move is former Celtics guard Jeff Teague. While acknowledging Brown’s talent, Teague believes Paul George’s current role and playing style could create a stronger partnership with franchise star Jayson Tatum as Boston begins a new chapter.

1. Teague Sees A Better Basketball Fit

During an appearance on the Club 520 podcast, Teague explained why he believes George may complement the Celtics more effectively than Brown. In his view, George has reached a stage of his career where he is comfortable playing a supporting role rather than serving as a team’s primary offensive option.

Teague pointed to George’s performances last season as evidence that the veteran can still contribute at a high level while sharing responsibilities with other stars. That flexibility, he argued, could help create a smoother offensive balance in Boston.

According to Teague, the change may ultimately allow Tatum to assume complete control of the franchise’s offense. He believes removing uncertainty surrounding leadership could strengthen Tatum’s case as one of the NBA’s leading Most Valuable Player candidates.

Rather than diminishing George’s importance, Teague suggested the veteran’s willingness to complement teammates could become one of Boston’s greatest strengths. His experience, scoring ability, and defensive versatility still provide significant value even if he is no longer expected to carry an offense every night.

2. Boston Begins A New Direction

The trade also follows years of speculation regarding the relationship between Brown and Tatum. Although the duo achieved remarkable success together, including helping deliver an NBA championship in 2024, reports frequently suggested there was tension beneath the surface.

Those rumors centered on the possibility of internal competition and differing ambitions between the two All-Stars. While neither player publicly acknowledged serious issues, speculation persisted that Boston would eventually have to choose one franchise cornerstone over the other.

If those reports influenced the Celtics’ decision, acquiring George represents an attempt to build a roster with a more clearly defined hierarchy. As one of the league’s established veterans, George is widely viewed as someone capable of adapting his game to complement another superstar.

At 36 years old, George no longer relies solely on athleticism to impact games. Instead, he brings experience, perimeter shooting, defensive versatility, and leadership qualities that could help Boston remain among the Eastern Conference’s top contenders.

3. More Changes Could Follow

Teague also suggested that Boston may not be finished reshaping its roster. With additional first-round and second-round picks acquired in the trade, the Celtics now possess valuable assets that could be used in future negotiations.

One possibility Teague mentioned involves pursuing Trey Murphy III from the New Orleans Pelicans. He believes pairing Murphy with Tatum and George would give Boston another versatile wing capable of contributing on both ends of the floor.

While there has been no indication such a move is imminent, the additional draft capital provides Boston with increased flexibility. Whether the Celtics choose to make another trade or retain those selections for future roster building, they now have more options than before the deal.

Ultimately, the success of the Brown-for-George trade will be judged by results on the court. If George helps maximize Tatum’s strengths while Boston continues competing for championships, the organization may ultimately view the controversial decision as a necessary step toward extending its title window.
