For much of the past several seasons, the Los Angeles Chargers have been defined by one central figure: quarterback Justin Herbert. Despite Herbert’s individual talent and consistent production, the team has often struggled to build a supporting cast capable of matching his ability.
That perception is something the Chargers are hoping to change heading into the 2026 season. With a new coaching direction and an improved offensive approach, Los Angeles believes it has surrounded Herbert with enough talent to compete at a higher level.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh has been especially confident in the group of wide receivers available to the team. During mandatory minicamp, he made a strong statement about the potential of the Chargers’ receiving corps, suggesting that all three primary wideouts have the ability to become major contributors.
The confidence comes as the organization looks for more consistency from its offense. Herbert has already established himself as one of the league’s premier quarterbacks, and the Chargers believe better weapons around him could unlock an even higher level of performance.
1. Harbaugh Praises Receiver Potential
Harbaugh did not hesitate when discussing the talent level of his receivers. The Chargers coach stated that the team has three elite wideouts, showing the belief the organization has in its current offensive pieces. The group is led by Ladd McConkey, who made an immediate impact after entering the league. McConkey impressed during his rookie season in 2024 and quickly became one of Herbert’s most trusted targets. However, his second season came with challenges. He fell short of the 1,000-yard mark and appeared to struggle at times while sharing opportunities with veteran receiver Keenan Allen. With Allen no longer on the roster, McConkey is expected to return to a larger role in the offense. The Chargers believe he has the ability to become Herbert’s primary target once again, although he has been managing a hamstring issue during the offseason.
2. Johnston Looks for Breakthrough Season
Another key part of the Chargers’ plans is Quentin Johnston, a former first-round pick who remains a player the organization believes can develop into a long-term contributor. Johnston’s early NFL career has included inconsistent moments, but Los Angeles has continued to show confidence in his potential. The team recently exercised his fifth-year option, signaling that it sees value in keeping him beyond his original rookie contract. Harbaugh has been encouraged by Johnston’s offseason progress and believes the receiver is preparing for a major improvement. The coach praised his preparation and suggested that Johnston could produce the best season of his career. A breakout year from Johnston would significantly improve the Chargers’ offensive balance. A more reliable receiving threat opposite McConkey would create additional opportunities for Herbert and make the passing attack more difficult for defenses to contain.
3. Building a Stronger Offense Around Herbert
The Chargers are also counting on Tre’ Harris to become an important part of the receiving group. The young wideout had a limited role during his rookie season but showed flashes of the speed and explosiveness the team values. Harris represents another piece of the Chargers’ effort to develop a deeper offensive unit. Instead of relying heavily on one or two players, Los Angeles wants multiple receivers capable of making plays in different situations. The arrival of new offensive ideas and a stronger supporting cast could create a significant opportunity for Herbert. The quarterback has already proven he can perform at a high level, but improved weapons could allow him to take even greater control of games. If McConkey, Johnston, and Harris all reach their potential, the Chargers could have one of the league’s most dangerous receiving groups. Combined with Herbert’s talent, that possibility gives Los Angeles optimism that its offense can finally match the expectations surrounding its star quarterback.
