Joe Kelly is returning to familiar ground as he begins life after professional baseball. Following an accomplished 13-year Major League career, the former Los Angeles Dodgers reliever has accepted a coaching position at Corona High School, the Southern California program where his baseball journey first gained national attention.
The 38-year-old will serve as an assistant coach with an emphasis on working with the Panthers’ pitching staff. His appointment marks a full-circle moment, allowing him to share more than a decade of professional experience with one of the nation’s premier high school baseball programs.
Kelly’s move into coaching comes after he stepped away from Major League Baseball ahead of the 2026 season. After attempting a comeback with the Dodgers, he announced during an appearance on the “Baseball Isn’t Boring” podcast in late 2025 that his playing career had come to an end.
Now, instead of preparing for another major league season, Kelly is focusing on helping young athletes develop both their skills and understanding of the game. His arrival gives Corona High one of the most accomplished former professional players to join a high school coaching staff in recent years.
1. A Full-Circle Return to Corona High
Kelly’s coaching appointment represents a meaningful homecoming. Long before he became known for his fiery competitiveness on Major League mounds, he established himself as one of California’s top high school pitchers while wearing a Corona High uniform.
His performances eventually led to a successful collegiate career at UC Riverside before the St. Louis Cardinals selected him in the third round of the 2009 MLB Draft. That opportunity launched a professional career that spanned more than a decade and included several memorable postseason appearances.
As an assistant coach, Kelly’s primary responsibility will be developing the Panthers’ pitchers. His firsthand knowledge of pitching mechanics, preparation, and the mental side of competition should provide valuable guidance for players hoping to continue their baseball careers beyond high school.
For Corona High, bringing back one of its most accomplished alumni strengthens an already respected program. Kelly’s experience competing at baseball’s highest level offers young players daily access to lessons that few high school athletes have the opportunity to receive firsthand.
2. An Accomplished Major League Career
Kelly appeared in 485 Major League games during his professional career, compiling a 54-38 record with a 3.98 earned run average. Although he began as a starting pitcher, his transition to the bullpen helped unlock the power repertoire that became his trademark.
Throughout his career, Kelly played for several organizations, including the St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and Los Angeles Dodgers. His combination of velocity, movement, and intensity made him a valuable late-inning option for multiple playoff contenders.
Among his biggest accomplishments were two World Series championships. He earned his first title with the Boston Red Sox in 2018 before helping the Dodgers capture the 2020 World Series, ending the franchise’s championship drought in a season unlike any other in baseball history.
Kelly later returned to Los Angeles for a second stint with the Dodgers, making 46 relief appearances across the 2023 and 2024 seasons before bringing his Major League career to a close. His competitive style and postseason experience left a lasting impression on every clubhouse he joined.
3. Helping Build the Next Generation
Corona High has developed into one of California’s premier baseball programs, and Kelly joins the staff at a time when expectations remain high. The Panthers recently completed another successful season, finishing with a 24-9 record while earning recognition among the state’s top-ranked teams.
Head coach Andy Wise noted that Kelly never truly stepped away from the program after retiring. According to Wise, the former major leaguer continued attending games, following the team’s progress, and offering advice to players whenever possible.
The opportunity to formally join the coaching staff developed after Kelly and Wise spent time together speaking with players during a team trip. Their conversations eventually led to the decision to bring Kelly aboard as an assistant coach.
His arrival also comes after Corona High produced four selections in the 2025 MLB Draft, further reinforcing the school’s reputation as a pipeline for elite baseball talent. With Kelly now helping mentor the pitching staff, the Panthers hope his professional experience will further strengthen a program already known for producing high-level players and preparing them for success at the next level.
