The Duke Blue Devils strengthened its 2026 roster with a major addition, as former Wisconsin standout John Blackwell announced his commitment following a lengthy transfer portal recruitment process. The decision ends weeks of speculation about where one of the Big Ten’s top scorers would land.

Blackwell entered the transfer portal after a breakout season with the Wisconsin Badgers, quickly emerging as one of the most sought-after players available. His scoring production and versatility made him a priority target for several high-major programs across the country.

After narrowing his options to a final group that included Alabama, Arizona, Louisville, UCLA, Illinois, and Duke, the decision ultimately came down to fit and development opportunity. His commitment was confirmed Tuesday, closing one of the most closely followed portal recruitments of the offseason.

The move gives Duke an immediate offensive weapon as it continues reshaping its roster under head coach Jon Scheyer.

1. Breakout Season Elevates Profile

Blackwell’s rise in value followed a strong third season in college basketball, where he established himself as one of the Big Ten’s most productive guards. He averaged 19.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, showcasing consistent scoring ability. He also shot 38.9% from three-point range, adding perimeter efficiency to his offensive arsenal. His ability to score at all three levels made him a difficult matchup for opposing defenses. Playing alongside teammate Nick Boyd, Blackwell helped form one of the conference’s most productive backcourts. Their combined output elevated Wisconsin’s offensive consistency throughout the season. That performance placed him among the top guards in the transfer portal once he made his decision to explore new opportunities.

2. Recruitment Ends With Confidence in Duke

Despite a competitive recruitment process, Blackwell stated that Duke felt like the right fit from the beginning. He emphasized early conversations with head coach Jon Scheyer and assistant Emanuel Dildy as key factors in his decision. He also noted that his visit to campus confirmed his expectations about the program’s direction and development structure. The environment, he said, matched what he was seeking in his next step. Blackwell made his decision official just before the transfer portal deadline closed, ending a process that drew significant national attention. His choice reflects both trust in the coaching staff and belief in Duke’s long-term competitiveness. The commitment represents a significant recruiting win for Scheyer during a critical offseason period.

3. Major Addition to Reloaded Blue Devils Roster

Blackwell joins a Duke program undergoing notable roster turnover but still positioned among the nation’s elite. His arrival helps offset key departures from the program’s previous core. Duke recently lost former five-star recruit Nikolas Khamenia and four-star guard Darren Harris, creating opportunities for new contributors to step into larger roles. Blackwell is expected to be one of those immediate impact players. He joins ex-Belmont forward Drew Scharnowski as part of Duke’s transfer portal additions, adding experience and scoring depth to the roster. The Blue Devils also bring in one of the top recruiting classes in the country, led by five-star prospects Deron Rippey Jr., Cameron Williams, and Bryson Howard, maintaining their national title aspirations.
