The Kansas Jayhawks are expected to once again feature prominently in the NBA Draft conversation, with Darryn Peterson projected as a potential first-round selection after a brief but impactful freshman season. His departure, however, leaves a significant gap in the backcourt as the program looks to reload quickly.

Peterson’s season ended in disappointing fashion after a dramatic NCAA Tournament loss to St. John’s Red Storm, a game that underscored Kansas’ need for additional perimeter scoring and shot creation. The result forced head coach Bill Self and his staff to reassess how they will replace his offensive production.

While the Jayhawks continue to evaluate incoming talent from the high school ranks, including four-star guard Luke Barnett, the program is increasingly focused on the transfer portal as the most immediate solution. Experience and proven production at the college level have become a priority.

One name has quickly risen to the top of Kansas’ radar: Terrence Hill, a dynamic guard from VCU who delivered multiple standout performances during the NCAA Tournament.

1. A Breakout Performer On The Big Stage

Hill gained national attention during March Madness with a standout performance against the North Carolina Tar Heels, where he erupted for 34 points in a decisive tournament game. The performance effectively ended North Carolina’s season and cemented Hill as one of the tournament’s breakout stars. Throughout the season, Hill averaged 15 points per game for VCU, despite coming off the bench for much of the year. His impact as a sixth man earned him recognition in the Atlantic 10, including Sixth Man of the Year honors and consideration for Most Improved Player. His ability to produce efficiently in limited minutes highlighted both his scoring instincts and adaptability. Hill’s scoring bursts often came in high-pressure situations, a trait that has made him an appealing target for high-major programs. That combination of production and poise has placed him firmly on Kansas’ radar as they evaluate options to replace Peterson’s offensive output.

2. Offensive Skill Set And Fit In Lawrence

Hill brings a versatile offensive profile that aligns with Kansas’ need for perimeter scoring. He is particularly effective as a catch-and-shoot threat, using a quick release to generate open looks from long range. A significant portion of his three-point production came off the catch rather than assisted setups, showing his ability to create space and operate both on and off the ball. That versatility could prove valuable in Bill Self’s structured offensive system. Beyond scoring, Hill has shown solid passing instincts and decision-making. He rarely turns the ball over and has demonstrated the ability to function as a secondary playmaker when needed. Pairing him with emerging guard Taylen Kinney could give Kansas a balanced backcourt capable of both distributing and scoring efficiently at the high-major level.

3. Areas For Growth And Strategic Value

Despite his offensive strengths, Hill’s defensive consistency remains an area for development. Kansas staff would likely need to emphasize positioning and physical engagement to maximize his impact on that end of the floor. He also has room to expand his scoring versatility. While effective from three-point range, improving his ability to finish through contact and attack the paint would make him a more complete offensive threat. Still, his overall profile fits a Kansas team seeking immediate production after Peterson’s departure. His experience in high-pressure tournament settings adds another layer of value to his potential role in Lawrence. For the Jayhawks, adding a proven scorer with March Madness success could be crucial in maintaining their competitive standing. If developed properly, Hill could help Kansas push beyond early tournament exits and re-enter Final Four contention.
