The Los Angeles Sparks received encouraging news regarding star guard Kelsey Plum after medical evaluations confirmed that her recent injury is an ankle sprain rather than a more serious setback.

The injury occurred during a Sparks practice session last Tuesday, prompting immediate concern given Plum’s importance to the team’s offensive structure and early-season production.

Following the diagnosis, the organization announced she would be re-evaluated within a week, a timeline that aligned with the team’s matchup against the Las Vegas Aces, though she remained sidelined for the contest.

Despite her absence, early indications from the team suggest optimism that the injury is manageable, and that Plum could return once she is cleared medically and physically ready.

1. Day-To-Day Status Brings Relief

Head coach Lynne Roberts provided a cautiously optimistic update on Kelsey Plum before the Sparks faced the Aces, describing her condition as day-to-day while noting steady progress in recovery. Roberts emphasized Plum’s commitment to rehabilitation, highlighting her relentless approach to recovery work and her determination to return as quickly as possible without risking further injury. Although the team was on the road during her recovery process, Plum remained heavily involved in treatment and conditioning work at the Sparks’ facility, continuing to progress under medical supervision. Roberts added that while no exact return date has been set, the expectation is that Plum will be back as soon as she is fully cleared and comfortable with her movement.

2. Elite Production Before Injury

Before the injury, Kelsey Plum was producing at an MVP-caliber level, establishing herself as one of the league’s most dominant offensive players early in the season. She led the WNBA in scoring at 26.8 points per game while also setting career highs in assists at 6.3 per contest, showcasing her expanded role as both scorer and facilitator. Her efficiency numbers also stood out, with shooting splits of 58.9 percent from the field and 48.8 percent from three-point range, reflecting a highly efficient offensive stretch. In her final game before the injury, Plum delivered a standout performance with 38 points, nine assists, four rebounds, and one steal in a statement win over the Las Vegas Aces.

3. Sparks Adjust While Waiting For Return

Drafted first overall in 2017, Kelsey Plum joined the Sparks in a major roster move ahead of the 2025 season and quickly became the centerpiece of their offensive system. Her absence has forced Los Angeles to adjust its rotation and offensive responsibilities, with the team splitting its first two games without her, including a win over the Washington Mystics and a loss to the Connecticut Sun. While the early results have been mixed, the Sparks remain focused on maintaining competitiveness until Plum returns to full health and resumes her leadership role. The organization continues to monitor her recovery closely, viewing her return as a key factor in sustaining momentum and improving consistency as the season progresses.
