The Sacramento Kings are approaching the end of another difficult season, with the team once again facing the possibility of missing the playoffs and returning to the draft lottery. Entering Sunday’s matchup with the Utah Jazz, Sacramento held a 17–51 record, placing it near the bottom of the league standings.

For a franchise that hoped to build momentum in recent years, the current campaign has fallen well short of expectations. Injuries, inconsistent play, and roster changes have contributed to a season defined by rebuilding rather than contention.

Yet even amid the disappointing results, head coach Doug Christie has maintained a positive outlook about certain developments within the team. One of the brightest spots, according to Christie, has been the emergence of guard Killian Hayes.

Hayes recently earned a two-year contract from Sacramento after first joining the team on consecutive 10-day agreements. His performance in those brief opportunities convinced the Kings’ coaching staff that he could be a valuable piece moving forward.

1. Hayes Earns Opportunity in Sacramento

Hayes’ path to a longer stay in Sacramento began with a series of short-term chances to prove himself. After signing two separate 10-day contracts, he appeared in 10 games for the Kings and gradually carved out a role within the rotation. During those appearances, Hayes demonstrated the qualities that Christie values in a floor general. The coach highlighted the guard’s ability to handle the ball under pressure and keep the offense organized during possessions. According to Christie, Hayes’ composure as a playmaker has helped stabilize Sacramento’s offensive sets. His willingness to move the ball and initiate plays has allowed teammates to find better scoring opportunities. Defensively, Hayes has also made a strong impression. Christie described his defensive effort as “stellar,” pointing to the guard’s energy and attention to detail on that end of the floor.

2. Coach Sees Room for Growth

While Christie has been pleased with Hayes’ early contributions, he believes the guard still has significant room to develop within Sacramento’s system. Adjusting to the team’s offensive structure and defensive principles remains a work in progress. The coach emphasized that Hayes’ size and ability to attack the basket make him a promising option in the backcourt. When driving toward the rim, Hayes has shown flashes of the physical tools that once made him a highly regarded prospect. Christie also praised the guard’s attitude and work ethic. According to the coach, Hayes consistently tries to make the correct decisions on the floor and remains focused on improving different aspects of his game. That approach has made Hayes a favorite within the coaching staff. Christie noted that players who prioritize teamwork and discipline often have a positive impact on winning, even if their contributions do not always appear prominently in the box score.

3. A Career Still Seeking Breakthrough

Hayes entered the NBA with considerable expectations after being selected seventh overall in the 2020 draft by the Detroit Pistons. At the time, he was viewed as a promising young guard with strong playmaking instincts and defensive potential. However, his professional career has not unfolded as smoothly as many anticipated. Hayes struggled to establish consistency in Detroit and later spent a brief stint with the Brooklyn Nets, where he appeared in six games last season. During that stretch with Brooklyn, Hayes averaged 9.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 5.2 assists, offering glimpses of his ability as a facilitator. Still, he continued searching for a long-term role that would allow him to stabilize his career. The 2020 draft class that Hayes was part of has produced several standout players, including Deni Avdija of the Portland Trail Blazers, Devin Vassell of the San Antonio Spurs, Tyrese Haliburton of the Indiana Pacers, Tyrese Maxey of the Philadelphia 76ers, and Payton Pritchard of the Boston Celtics.
