Georgia will face Alabama on Saturday in the SEC Championship, with more than just a trophy on the line. After a narrow 24-21 defeat at the hands of the Crimson Tide in September, Kirby Smart is looking for revenge. A victory could secure Georgia a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff and a chance to finally topple Alabama in the postseason.
Since that loss, Georgia has been dominant, winning eight consecutive games. Highlights include a decisive 25-point win over Texas and a strong performance against Ole Miss. However, the Bulldogs have faced challenges, narrowly edging Florida by four points and struggling offensively against Georgia Tech in a 16-9 victory last week.
Despite recent offensive struggles, Georgia remains 22nd nationally in points per game. The Bulldogs’ defense continues to shine, ranking 12th in the country in both yards allowed and points per game, while featuring the seventh-best run defense and 46th-best pass defense. Smart will rely on this balanced team to seek his second win over Alabama.
The matchup carries personal stakes for Smart. Since leaving Alabama as defensive coordinator, he has struggled against his former team. His record against the Crimson Tide sits at 1-7, with no victories in regular-season or SEC Championship matchups. Saturday’s game could rewrite that narrative.
1. Smart’s History Against Alabama
Kirby Smart’s tenure at Georgia has been marked by repeated frustrations against Alabama. His first encounter came in the 2017 CFP National Championship, where Georgia fell 26-23 in overtime. A year later, Alabama again bested the Bulldogs, winning the 2018 SEC Championship 35-28. Georgia’s first regular-season matchup under Smart occurred in 2020, ending in a 41-24 loss. In 2021, Georgia split two meetings with the Tide, dropping the SEC Championship but winning the National Championship rematch 33-18. Recent matchups have followed a similar pattern: Alabama narrowly defeated Georgia in the 2023 SEC Championship 27-24 and again in the 2024 regular season, 41-34. Overall, Smart has yet to beat Alabama in the regular season or in the SEC Championship. He is 0-3 in SEC title games against the Tide, though 3-1 in SEC Championships when facing other opponents. Notably, Smart has never lost to the same team twice in a single season—a streak that could come to an end or be extended depending on Saturday’s outcome. Alabama has consistently been the benchmark for Smart’s teams. For Georgia, overcoming the Tide is not just about a title but also breaking a long-standing hurdle in Smart’s coaching career.
2. Players Peaking at the Right Time
Georgia’s roster appears to be hitting form at a crucial moment. Running back Nate Frazier has improved significantly in the second half of the season, scoring three touchdowns in his last six games and surpassing 70 rushing yards in four contests, a stark contrast to his early-season performance. Receiver Zachariah Branch has also surged. After a slow start with only 291 yards in the first six games, Branch has accumulated 400 yards and two touchdowns in the latter half of the season. These performances provide Georgia with offensive weapons capable of challenging Alabama’s defense. The Bulldogs’ defense has tightened after early-season lapses. Following a 41-point concession to Tennessee and a 24-point outing against Alabama, Georgia has limited opponents to 22 points over the last three games, scoring 86 points themselves. While not flawless against Georgia Tech, the defense has shown resilience and balance that could prove decisive against the Tide. This combination of peaking players and a solid defense positions Georgia well. If the Bulldogs are to achieve their first SEC Championship victory over Alabama, timing could be everything.
3. Breaking the Alabama Barrier
Georgia is aiming to become the first team to win consecutive SEC Championships since Alabama accomplished the feat in 2020-21. Since Nick Saban’s arrival in 2007, Alabama has won nine consecutive SEC title games, including four victories over Georgia. Georgia, in contrast, has three SEC Championship wins in nine appearances and has never defeated Alabama in the title game. Historical trends suggest that Alabama has been the dominant force, but Georgia’s current form and roster balance make this matchup particularly competitive. Smart’s teams have rarely lost twice to the same opponent in a season, and both programs appear evenly matched heading into Saturday. Offensive improvements, defensive consistency, and the drive for redemption could tilt the scales in Georgia’s favor. If there was ever a year for Kirby Smart to finally overcome Alabama in the SEC Championship, this is it. The game promises to be tight, competitive, and potentially historic.
