Kyle Busch has never been one to shy away from the spotlight. Two NASCAR Cup Series championships. Hundreds of wins. A career built on speed, grit, and a whole lot of controversy. But nothing, not even a late-race pass at Talladega, could have prepared fans for what he casually dropped at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in March 2026.

A Days of Thunder sequel might be in the works. And Busch is already in the mix. During a press conference at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Busch confirmed he’d been approached by a film writer who’s been making the rounds in the NASCAR paddock, gathering stories, getting a feel for the sport, and trying to figure out what a modern-day sequel to the 1990 Tom Cruise classic could actually look like.

“You’ve got to be careful with it, because the first one was so good,” Busch said. “You don’t want to screw up the second one.”

That’s either the most sensible thing a NASCAR driver has ever said to a Hollywood writer, or a very polite way of saying: don’t mess this up. Either way, the confirmation sent fans into a frenzy. And for good reason.

1. Why Days of Thunder Still Matters

Days of Thunder is not a perfect film. The plot is thin, the science is questionable, and Cole Trickle’s helmet probably wouldn’t pass today’s safety standards. But none of that matters. The 1990 film grossed more than double its production budget, introduced an entire generation to NASCAR, and gave the sport a cultural footprint it’s been living off ever since. “I am more than a driver. I am a winner.” People who have never watched a lap of racing know that line. It was Top Gun with race cars. Which is why, when Top Gun: Maverick absolutely demolished the box office in 2022, people started asking the obvious question: could Days of Thunder do the same thing?

2. The Pieces Are Already There

What makes this more than just Hollywood gossip is the names attached to it. Tom Cruise hasn’t exactly been quiet about his love for racing. His friendship with Jeff Gordon, one of the most decorated drivers in NASCAR history, has kept the idea of a sequel simmering for years. Gordon has reportedly been consulted directly by Cruise, which tells you this isn’t just some casual dinner table conversation. Then there’s Jerry Bruckheimer. The producer behind the original film has been deep in the motorsports world again, most notably with his involvement in the Formula 1 film project. That kind of re-engagement doesn’t happen by accident. And now you’ve got a writer actually showing up to NASCAR events, sitting down with drivers and teams, doing real research. That’s not development-in-name-only. That’s someone who wants to get it right. Busch is an interesting figure to have in these conversations. He’s polarizing in the best possible way, beloved by some, absolutely despised by others, and impossible to ignore. He’s got the kind of personality that translates to screen, and the kind of career that gives a writer plenty to work with. His caution about the sequel is also worth noting. Busch knows what the original meant to NASCAR fans. He understands the weight of that legacy better than most. If he’s in the room offering feedback, the filmmakers are at least getting a perspective that’s grounded in reality.

3. What NASCAR Needs From This

NASCAR’s global footprint has grown, but it still trails Formula 1 when it comes to mainstream pop culture relevance, especially internationally. A well-executed Days of Thunder sequel, with the right cast and the right story, could change that conversation overnight. The sport has the drama. It has the personalities. It has the spectacle. It just needs a vehicle to deliver all of that to audiences who’ve never sat through a 500-mile race. No production timeline has been announced. No studio has made it official. Cruise and Bruckheimer haven’t signed anything publicly. The writer is still out there gathering material. But the wheels are turning. Busch has confirmed the conversations are real. The interest from all the right people is there. And Hollywood has proven, time and again, that a good sequel to a beloved sports film can electrify audiences all over again. The only question now is whether they can pull it off without Busch’s warning turning prophetic. Don’t screw up the second one.
