The race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot has become one of the tournament’s most compelling storylines as three of the world’s biggest soccer stars remain locked together atop the scoring charts. Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi, and Erling Haaland have each found the net seven times, setting up an intriguing battle as the knockout rounds continue.

Haaland joined the leaders after producing a two-goal performance in Norway’s victory over Belgium, helping his nation advance while drawing level with Mbappe and Messi in total goals. His latest display ensured that the competition for the tournament’s top individual scoring honor remains wide open.

Although the three players are tied on goals, FIFA’s official tiebreaking criteria currently place Mbappe in first position. The French forward has contributed more than just goals, giving him an advantage that could prove decisive if the deadlock remains through the remainder of the competition.

With several knockout matches still to be played, the standings remain far from settled. Every goal, assist, and minute on the field could influence who ultimately finishes the tournament as its leading scorer.

1. FIFA’s Tiebreaking Rules

FIFA awards the Golden Boot to the player who finishes the tournament with the most goals. However, when two or more players are tied, additional criteria are used to determine the winner rather than declaring multiple recipients.

The first tiebreaker is the number of assists recorded during the tournament. Assists are officially determined by FIFA’s Technical Study Group, making playmaking contributions just as valuable when players finish with identical goal totals.

That rule currently favors Mbappe. Along with his seven goals, the France captain has registered two assists, while both Messi and Haaland have yet to record one. As a result, Mbappe sits atop the Golden Boot standings despite the three-way tie in goals.

Should players remain tied after goals and assists are compared, FIFA moves to another measure. The player who accumulated the same production while playing fewer total minutes would receive the higher ranking, rewarding greater efficiency over the course of the tournament.

2. Mbappe’s Position Strengthens

Mbappe’s current lead is significant because France remains among the strongest contenders to capture the World Cup title. A deeper tournament run would naturally provide him with additional opportunities to extend both his goal total and assist count.

France’s balanced attack has also allowed Mbappe to contribute in multiple ways beyond finishing chances himself. His ability to create scoring opportunities for teammates has become an important advantage under FIFA’s tiebreaking system.

Messi, meanwhile, continues to carry Argentina’s hopes as the defending world champions pursue another deep tournament run. The veteran forward has consistently delivered on the biggest stage throughout his international career and remains well positioned to add to his scoring tally.

Haaland has also strengthened his case after his decisive performance against Belgium. Norway’s progression to the quarterfinals keeps the prolific striker firmly in contention, especially if he continues converting chances at the rate he has displayed throughout the tournament.

3. Knockout Stage Could Decide the Award

The remaining knockout matches are expected to determine the outcome of the Golden Boot race. France is scheduled to meet Morocco in the quarterfinals on July 9, giving Mbappe another opportunity to increase his lead.

Norway’s next challenge comes on July 11, when Haaland’s side will face the winner of the matchup between Mexico and England. Another productive outing from the Norwegian striker could quickly erase Mbappe’s current advantage.

Argentina still has work to do before reaching the quarterfinals. Messi will first look to guide his team past Egypt in the Round of 16 on July 7. If Argentina advances, another potential scoring opportunity would await in a quarterfinal against either Switzerland or Colombia.

With multiple rounds still remaining, the Golden Boot race is likely to stay competitive until the final stages of the World Cup. Whether Mbappe maintains his edge or Messi and Haaland close the gap, the tournament’s biggest stars are set to provide another captivating battle alongside the chase for the championship.
