The Philadelphia 76ers believe they may have added another promising piece to their future when they selected Labaron Philon with the 22nd overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. The former Alabama standout arrives in Philadelphia with a reputation as a productive two-way guard capable of contributing on both ends of the floor.

While much of the attention surrounding Philon has focused on his game, the rookie recently offered insight into another aspect of his transition to the NBA: his jersey number. After wearing No. 0 throughout his collegiate career, Philon was forced to make a change upon joining a team where Tyrese Maxey already owns the number.

Rather than choosing an entirely different identity, Philon opted for No. 00, a decision he believes carries its own significance. The rookie pointed to an interesting connection between Philadelphia’s veteran stars and its emerging young talent when explaining his choice.

As Philon prepares for his first professional season, the jersey number serves as a small but symbolic reminder of the role he hopes to carve out on a roster filled with established contributors. For now, however, his focus remains on earning minutes and continuing his development within one of the Eastern Conference’s most talented teams.

1. The Meaning Behind No. 00

Philon explained that his selection of No. 00 was inspired in part by the numbers worn by his teammates. Tyrese Maxey continues to wear No. 0, while veteran star Jaylen Brown sports No. 7. Meanwhile, Philon and fellow young guard VJ Edgecombe have adopted doubled versions of their collegiate numbers.

To Philon, the pairing creates a unique connection between the franchise’s current stars and its next generation. He described the arrangement as “tough,” embracing the visual distinction while acknowledging the players who paved the way before him.

Jersey numbers have long held significance throughout professional sports, often becoming intertwined with a player’s identity. While No. 00 is relatively uncommon in the NBA, Philon appears eager to make it his own as he begins his professional career.

The choice also highlights the realities of transitioning from college to the NBA. Many rookies arrive in the league only to discover that their preferred numbers are already occupied, forcing them to adopt new identities as they establish themselves at the next level.

2. A Promising Addition in Philadelphia

Philadelphia selected Philon with the belief that his skill set could eventually make him an important contributor. At Alabama, he demonstrated an ability to score efficiently while also creating opportunities for teammates and competing defensively.

During his final collegiate season, Philon averaged 22 points, four rebounds, and five assists while posting impressive shooting percentages from the field, beyond the arc, and the free-throw line. Those numbers helped elevate his draft stock and solidified his position as a first-round selection.

Still only 20 years old, Philon enters the NBA with considerable room for growth. His combination of athleticism, shot creation, and energy has made him an intriguing prospect, particularly for a team that can afford to be patient with his development.

The 76ers are expected to benefit from surrounding Philon with experienced players. Learning alongside Maxey, Brown, Joel Embiid, and fellow young talent VJ Edgecombe could provide an ideal environment for refining his game without immediately placing overwhelming expectations on his shoulders.

3. Earning a Role Takes Time

Despite his potential, Philon’s path to consistent playing time may not be straightforward. Philadelphia possesses one of the league’s deeper collections of ballhandlers, with several established players already expected to command significant offensive responsibilities.

Maxey remains a focal point of the team’s attack, while Brown and Embiid continue to anchor the starting lineup. Additionally, offseason acquisition Anfernee Simons is projected to serve as a major source of scoring off the bench, further increasing competition for minutes.

That depth allows the organization to adopt a measured approach with Philon. Rather than rushing him into a prominent role, the 76ers can prioritize long-term development and allow him to adjust to the speed and physicality of the professional game.

His recent Summer League performance illustrated both his promise and the challenges that remain ahead. Although Philon finished with 15 points in a loss to Orlando, he struggled with efficiency, underscoring the adjustments many rookies face as they transition to the NBA. For Philadelphia, those growing pains are viewed as a natural part of a process they believe will ultimately pay dividends.
