The Los Angeles Lakers remain one of the NBA’s most closely watched teams this offseason, but despite several significant roster moves, one major need has yet to be addressed. The franchise continues searching for a reliable starting small forward as it reshapes its lineup for the 2026-27 season.

That search generated additional intrigue during NBA Summer League in Las Vegas when Lakers president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka was seen sharing a brief moment with Denver Nuggets forward Peyton Watson. While the interaction appeared casual, it quickly fueled speculation about whether Los Angeles has interest in acquiring the restricted free agent.

The timing of the sighting is noteworthy given the Lakers’ current roster situation. Following the departures of LeBron James, Rui Hachimura, and Marcus Smart, the team finds itself with limited depth on the wing and an obvious need for another versatile forward.

Although no official discussions have been confirmed, the encounter has added another layer to an offseason already filled with rumors surrounding Los Angeles and several high-profile forwards available through free agency or trade.

1. Pelinka’s Summer League Encounter Draws Attention

During Summer League festivities in Las Vegas, cameras captured Pelinka speaking with Watson, prompting immediate speculation across NBA circles. While there is no indication that the conversation involved contract negotiations, the meeting naturally attracted attention because of the Lakers’ well-known need for wing depth.

Watson has emerged as one of the more intriguing restricted free agents available this offseason. At just 23 years old, he has continued to develop into a versatile two-way forward capable of contributing on both ends of the floor.

His steady improvement with the Denver Nuggets has made him an attractive option for teams seeking athleticism, defensive versatility, and offensive upside. Those qualities align closely with what the Lakers are reportedly hoping to add before the start of training camp.

As a result, even a brief interaction between Pelinka and Watson became enough to spark widespread discussion about whether Los Angeles could somehow position itself to pursue the young forward despite financial limitations.

2. Obstacles Complicate Any Potential Move

While Watson may fit the Lakers’ roster needs, completing a deal appears far more difficult than generating speculation. Because he is a restricted free agent, the Nuggets retain significant control over his future and can match qualifying offers from rival teams.

Reports indicate Denver would seek a substantial return in any sign-and-trade involving Watson. Such a package would likely resemble the type of assets required in other recent transactions involving young starting-caliber players.

Those expectations present a challenge for Los Angeles. After acquiring center Walker Kessler earlier this offseason, the Lakers no longer possess the draft capital necessary to comfortably construct the kind of trade package Denver is reportedly seeking.

Salary cap limitations further complicate matters. Without sufficient financial flexibility to present Watson with a competitive offer sheet, the Lakers face significant barriers in attempting to acquire him through conventional free agency.

3. Alternative Plans May Shape Lakers’ Offseason

Given the financial and trade-related obstacles surrounding Watson, the Lakers may ultimately shift their focus elsewhere. One player frequently linked to Los Angeles is Jonathan Kuminga, whose athletic profile and positional versatility could help address the team’s need on the wing.

Kuminga represents a more attainable option under the current circumstances, even if negotiations would still require careful financial planning. His combination of size, scoring ability, and defensive potential has made him one of the more frequently discussed names connected to the Lakers this offseason.

Meanwhile, Denver faces its own difficult decisions. The Nuggets are navigating a challenging salary-cap situation, raising questions about whether they can retain every member of their young core while continuing to build a championship-caliber roster.

If Watson ultimately signs his qualifying offer and reaches unrestricted free agency next offseason, Los Angeles could find itself in a stronger position to pursue him. Until then, however, any move involving the promising forward appears unlikely without significant roster maneuvering or an unexpected breakthrough in negotiations.
