England appeared to be on the verge of ending years of World Cup frustration on Wednesday before a dramatic collapse sent the Three Lions crashing out of the tournament. Holding a one-goal lead late in their semifinal against Argentina, England instead conceded twice in the closing moments and watched their hopes of reaching the final disappear.

Anthony Gordon’s second-half strike had put England in control and seemingly within touching distance of a meeting with Spain in the championship match. As the clock continued to wind down, Thomas Tuchel’s side looked increasingly comfortable protecting its advantage.

That confidence, however, quickly evaporated. Argentina’s relentless pressure eventually produced an equalizer through Enzo Fernandez in the 85th minute before Lautaro Martinez delivered the decisive blow in stoppage time, heading home a pinpoint cross from Lionel Messi to secure a 2-1 victory.

In the aftermath, much of the attention shifted away from Argentina’s heroics and toward England’s approach in the final stages. Among those questioning the tactical decisions was former United States men’s national team star Landon Donovan, who offered a pointed assessment of Tuchel’s substitutions and game management.

1. England’s Control Slips Away

For much of the second half, England executed its game plan effectively. The Three Lions absorbed pressure when necessary and capitalized on one of their best attacking opportunities when Anthony Gordon finished a counterattack in the 55th minute.

The goal energized England and forced Argentina to chase the match. With fewer than 20 minutes remaining, Tuchel began making changes intended to preserve the lead and guide his team safely into the World Cup final.

His first significant move came in the 72nd minute, when goalscorer Gordon was replaced by defender Ezri Konsa. The substitution signaled England’s intention to prioritize protecting its advantage rather than searching for a second goal.

Tuchel continued down that path minutes later, introducing Dan Burn and Nico O’Reilly for Declan Rice and Reece James. The changes effectively transformed England into a defensive unit focused almost entirely on surviving the closing stages of the match.

2. Donovan Questions Tuchel’s Decisions

Landon Donovan did not hide his thoughts when discussing England’s collapse on the “Unfiltered Soccer” podcast. The former U.S. international said he struggled to understand Tuchel’s tactical approach once England took the lead.

Donovan acknowledged that adopting a more conservative posture late in a knockout match can be reasonable. However, he argued that England’s adjustments went too far, eliminating any ability to relieve pressure or maintain possession in dangerous areas of the field.

According to Donovan, England’s transition into a back-five formation invited Argentina to attack repeatedly without fear of being punished on the counter. The lack of attacking outlets allowed the defending champions to dominate possession during the final 20 minutes.

His criticism reflected what many observers noted during the match. England’s substitutions removed several of its most effective ball carriers and left the team with limited options once Argentina began pushing numbers forward in search of an equalizer.

3. Questions Ahead for England

Argentina’s comeback was ultimately the result of sustained pressure. Enzo Fernandez’s equalizer in the 85th minute came after England struggled to clear its lines consistently, while Martinez’s winner in stoppage time capped a sequence of attacks that had been building throughout the closing stages.

Only after falling behind did Tuchel make attacking substitutions, introducing Ivan Toney and Marcus Rashford in an attempt to salvage the result. By that point, however, England had little time remaining to mount a response.

The defeat represents another painful chapter in England’s recent World Cup history. The program has consistently reached the latter stages of major tournaments but has repeatedly fallen short when opportunities to claim international silverware have emerged.

Tuchel is now likely to face difficult questions regarding his decision-making in one of the biggest matches of his managerial career. While England’s overall tournament performance demonstrated considerable quality, the semifinal loss will inevitably be remembered for the tactical choices that preceded Argentina’s dramatic comeback.
