When the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired Lonzo Ball in a midseason trade, the move was seen as a potential low-risk opportunity. Cleveland hoped the former high draft pick could stabilize its backcourt and rediscover the form that once made him one of the NBA’s most intriguing young guards.
Instead, the experiment quickly unraveled. Ball struggled to find rhythm or consistency in Cleveland’s system, producing well below expectations during his brief stay with the team.
After just half a season, the Cavaliers chose to move on. Ball was sent to the Utah Jazz, who promptly waived the veteran guard, sending him into free agency.
Now, months after the move, Ball remains unsigned, raising questions about both his long-term health and his future role in the league.
1. A Trade That Never Found Momentum
Cleveland’s acquisition of Ball came in a straightforward deal with the Chicago Bulls, with the Cavaliers sending Isaac Okoro the other way. The move initially generated interest around the league, given Ball’s reputation as a pass-first playmaker and defensive-minded guard. However, Ball never managed to carve out a consistent role with Cleveland. Over 35 appearances, he averaged just 4.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game while struggling mightily with efficiency. His shooting numbers were particularly concerning. Ball converted only 30.1 percent of his field-goal attempts and hit just 27.2 percent of his three-point shots, production far below what the Cavaliers had hoped for when they brought him in. The struggles ultimately led the Cavaliers to make a financial decision. With Ball’s contract impacting their cap flexibility and his on-court performance lagging, Cleveland opted to move his salary to Utah, effectively ending the short-lived partnership.
2. LaVar Ball Speaks Out
During the season, Ball’s situation in Cleveland even drew public commentary from his outspoken father, LaVar Ball, who questioned how the team was using his son. Speaking on the Ball in the Family podcast, LaVar suggested the Cavaliers had miscast Lonzo’s role by bringing him off the bench and limiting his responsibilities. According to him, the guard’s effectiveness was being undermined by the way he was deployed within the offense. LaVar argued that Lonzo had rarely played a reduced or stationary role earlier in his career. Instead, he believed the Cavaliers should have trusted him with more control of the game, particularly later in contests. He even proposed a different usage plan, suggesting that if the team wanted to keep Lonzo’s minutes low, they could simply allow him to play extended stretches in the second half rather than scattered minutes throughout the game.
3. Health Concerns and an Uncertain Future
While LaVar Ball criticized Cleveland’s approach, the Cavaliers had their own reasons for caution. Lonzo’s injury history has been one of the most widely discussed storylines of his career. The guard previously missed multiple seasons due to severe knee issues that required extensive rehabilitation and surgeries. Those concerns made teams wary about placing heavy physical demands on him. Because of that history, Cleveland’s staff was reportedly careful about managing his workload and limiting the strain on his body. The team’s rotation decisions reflected a desire to protect his long-term health rather than push him into extended minutes. Now a free agent, Ball’s future remains uncertain. With little reported interest around the league and the regular season nearing its conclusion, it appears unlikely that he will sign with another team before the 2025–26 campaign ends.
