The Oklahoma City Thunder moved one step closer to another NBA Finals appearance after defeating the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals. Oklahoma City controlled much of the matchup, responding to every Spurs rally with timely offense and strong defensive execution throughout the second half.

As expected, much of the spotlight after the victory centered on stars such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Alex Caruso, who delivered key performances during critical stretches. Contributions from Jared McCain and Isaiah Hartenstein also helped the Thunder maintain momentum in front of their home crowd.

Yet one of the most talked-about moments from the game had little to do with scoring runs or playoff adjustments. Instead, social media quickly focused on a humorous interaction between Thunder guard Lu Dort and veteran NBA referee Tony Brothers late in the third quarter.

The image, which showed Dort in close proximity to Brothers following a foul call, quickly spread online and became one of the defining viral moments of the night. Fans across social media platforms turned the image into a meme almost immediately, adding another layer of entertainment to an already dramatic playoff series.

1. Viral Photo Captures Fans’ Attention

The moment occurred with just seconds remaining in the third quarter when Brothers whistled Dort for a foul. Cameras captured the Thunder forward reacting to the call while standing face-to-face with the longtime NBA official in an awkward but harmless exchange. Within minutes, screenshots of the interaction began circulating online. Fans joked about the unusual framing of the image, while others used it as another opportunity to debate officiating during the postseason. Some critics of the Thunder once again suggested Oklahoma City had benefited from favorable calls throughout the series. Despite the online criticism, the moment was largely treated humorously by basketball fans. Many viewers focused less on the foul itself and more on how unintentionally theatrical the interaction appeared when frozen in a single frame. The viral nature of the image demonstrated how quickly playoff moments can evolve beyond the game itself. In today’s NBA, memorable screenshots and reactions often gain as much traction online as highlights and postgame analysis, especially during high-profile playoff matchups.

2. Art Comparison Turns Moment Into Social Media Favorite

The image gained even more popularity after the social media account “Art But Make It Sports” compared the scene to “Flirtation,” an 1894 painting by artist Eugene de Blaas. The side-by-side comparison immediately resonated with basketball fans and art enthusiasts alike. Many users praised the accuracy of the comparison, with several calling it one of the best sports-and-art mashups the account had produced. Comments flooded social media throughout the evening as fans joked about the resemblance between the classical painting and the courtside interaction. The comparison added a lighter tone to what has otherwise been a highly competitive and emotionally charged series. Playoff basketball often creates tense conversations surrounding officiating, physical play, and momentum swings, but the viral image briefly united fans through humor instead of controversy. Even those with little interest in fine art joined the conversation. The popularity of the post reflected the growing role social media plays in shaping modern sports culture, where a single still image can become a larger storyline alongside the actual game itself.

3. Thunder Stay Focused on Finals Push

Lost beneath the online attention was the fact that Oklahoma City delivered one of its strongest performances of the postseason. The Thunder consistently answered San Antonio’s comeback attempts and maintained control late in the game behind disciplined execution on both ends of the floor. Dort quietly contributed to the victory despite the attention surrounding the viral photo. The defensive specialist finished Game 5 with seven points and four rebounds in 18 minutes while continuing to provide physical perimeter defense against San Antonio’s talented backcourt. For the Thunder, the primary focus remains closing out the series and securing another trip to the NBA Finals. Oklahoma City has relied on depth, defense, and composure throughout the postseason, and those qualities were again visible in Game 5. Attention will now shift toward Game 6, where the Spurs will attempt to extend the series on their home floor. While the NBA had not yet announced the officiating crew following Game 5, fans will undoubtedly continue watching closely both for the basketball itself and for any unexpected viral moments that may follow.
