The personal life of Luka Dončić has taken a dramatic turn, with his recent split from longtime partner Anamaria Goltes escalating into a complex international legal dispute. Earlier this month, it emerged that the couple, who had been together since 2016 and engaged for years, had separated amid growing tensions. What followed has quickly evolved into a high-stakes custody and financial battle spanning continents.

Goltes has been living in Slovenia since May 2025, where she relocated while pregnant with their second child. She has remained there with both daughters, Gabriela, born in November 2023, and Olivia, born late last year, firmly establishing Slovenia as the children’s primary residence.

Despite that, Goltes filed for child support in California, a move Dončić is aggressively challenging. The Los Angeles Lakers star, alongside high-profile attorney Laura Wasser, has asked a Los Angeles County judge to dismiss the case entirely. His argument is straightforward: neither he, Goltes, nor their children are California residents.

On that basis, he claims the filing is “procedurally defective and legally improper.” Dončić also points out that he had already initiated legal proceedings in Slovenia before Goltes filed in California, strengthening his position that the matter should be handled in their home country.

1. A 10-Year Relationship That Collapsed

The breakup between Dončić and Goltes was the culmination of mounting disagreements that ultimately escalated into legal proceedings. After nearly a decade together, what makes this case particularly complex is how quickly a private relationship fell apart. Earlier this month, reports confirmed their split, but the underlying tensions appear to have been building for months, especially around where their family would ultimately be based. Dončić described the recent development as a “clear attempt to forum shop and avail herself of the generous amounts of child support for which California is well-known.” He believes Goltes deliberately chose California due to its reputation for awarding higher child support, particularly in cases involving ultra-high earners like NBA superstars. With Dončić reportedly on a $165 million contract, the difference between a Slovenian ruling and a California ruling could be substantial. He also counters the necessity of such a filing by asserting that he already covers all expenses for both daughters. This claim is aimed at weakening the argument for additional court-mandated support in a different jurisdiction. The legal tension is deeply intertwined with personal conflict.

2. “That’s Life,” Dončić’s Public Calm vs Private Breakdown

Dončić reportedly spent months trying to convince Goltes to move to California with their children. His efforts ultimately failed and may have contributed to the breakup. The situation reached a boiling point in December when Dončić traveled to Slovenia for Olivia’s birth. During that visit, he allegedly pleaded with Goltes to allow their older daughter to return to California with him. The disagreement escalated to the point where police were called to Kranj Maternity Hospital. While officers later confirmed that no criminal offense had occurred, the incident underscores the emotional volatility of the situation. Dončić has since filed an injunction seeking access to his daughters, signaling that custody, not just financial support, is a central battleground. Amid the off-court chaos, Dončić continues to lead the Los Angeles Lakers. His on-ground performance doesn’t show a sign of the deep personal crisis he’s going through. When asked about the situation, his response was telling: “That’s life… basketball gives me some kind of peace.” It shows how he’s compartmentalizing the pressure, using the game as both escape and anchor.

3. Historic Form Amid Chaos: Luka Moves One Step Closer To Being the MVP

While his personal life spirals into a complex legal battle, Luka is simultaneously producing one of the most dominant stretches of basketball in recent NBA history. Balancing these two worlds is no small task. The demands of an NBA season leave little room for distraction, yet the stakes of his personal life are impossible to ignore. In the middle of the cross-border custody fight, he walks into Miami and drops 60 points, the most anyone has ever scored against the Miami Heat, breaking James Harden’s 58-point mark from 2019. And this feat came not in a home arena, not in a controlled environment, but on the road, in a game that required shot-making under pressure. Dončić went 18-of-30 from the field, hit nine threes, lived at the line, and still had the awareness to impact the game defensively with five steals. Alongside him, LeBron James quietly stacked a triple-double—19, 15, and 10—as the Los Angeles Lakers closed out a 134–126 win. But the game didn’t feel like a shared effort in the usual sense. It felt tilted around Dončić’s rhythm. And that’s where it connects back to everything else. Because right now, when the rest of his life looks unsettled and contested, this is the one space where nothing about him looks uncertain.
