As the San Francisco 49ers prepare for another Super Bowl pursuit, backup quarterback Mac Jones believes one of the franchise’s greatest strengths extends beyond what happens on the football field. While talent and coaching remain essential ingredients, Jones says the team’s culture has created an environment where players genuinely enjoy being part of the organization.

Jones joined the 49ers looking to reset his NFL career after an uneven stretch elsewhere. Although he initially arrived as a backup, the former first-round draft pick found an opportunity to contribute while also discovering what he describes as a unique atmosphere built on trust, friendship, and mutual support.

Speaking during George Kittle’s annual Tight End University event, Jones praised nearly every aspect of life inside the organization. From interactions with coaches and staff members to relationships among teammates, he explained that the 49ers have developed a family-like culture that stands apart from his previous experiences.

His comments offer another glimpse into why San Francisco has remained one of the NFL’s most consistent contenders in recent seasons. According to Jones, the team’s success is rooted not only in its roster but also in the strong personal connections that unite everyone throughout the organization.

1. A Different Kind of Organization

Jones spoke enthusiastically about the atmosphere surrounding the 49ers, saying the organization has created a welcoming environment that makes coming to work enjoyable every day. He noted that everyone—from equipment staff to players—plays a role in fostering that positive culture.

The quarterback explained that friendships extend beyond practices and game days. Players and staff regularly spend time together away from football, strengthening relationships that carry over into the locker room and onto the field during the season.

Jones remarked that the experience has been noticeably different from any stop in his football career, including both his college years at Alabama and his time with the New England Patriots. For him, the sense of unity within the 49ers organization has been one of the biggest surprises since arriving in San Francisco.

He believes those close relationships translate directly into better teamwork. When players genuinely trust and care about one another, communication improves, accountability becomes stronger, and the group is better equipped to overcome adversity throughout a long NFL season.

2. Brotherhood Fuels Success

According to Jones, championship-caliber teams require more than individual talent. He believes players must develop genuine bonds that allow them to function as a unified group rather than simply a collection of talented individuals.

Events such as Tight End University, organized by teammate George Kittle, provide another opportunity for players to strengthen those relationships outside their normal team activities. Jones pointed to gatherings like these as examples of how connections continue growing even during the offseason.

The veteran quarterback said he does not take the environment in San Francisco for granted. Whether he remains with the franchise for one more season or several years, he considers the opportunity to be part of such a supportive organization something he deeply appreciates.

That perspective reflects the culture head coach Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers have worked to establish over recent years. Consistent success has been accompanied by an emphasis on teamwork, accountability, and maintaining strong relationships throughout every level of the organization.

3. Career Finds New Life

Jones entered the NFL with high expectations after being selected 15th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft. His rookie season included a Pro Bowl selection and suggested he could become a long-term starting quarterback.

After facing challenges in the following years, Jones found a fresh opportunity with the 49ers. Injuries created additional playing time during the 2025 season, allowing him to demonstrate that he could still perform effectively when called upon.

In eight starts, Jones completed 69.6 percent of his passes while throwing for 2,151 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also posted a 97.4 passer rating, showing efficiency and composure within Kyle Shanahan’s offensive system while providing dependable support behind starting quarterback Brock Purdy.

As the 49ers enter the 2026 season with championship aspirations, Jones remains an important part of the roster. Whether serving as a reliable backup or stepping into action when needed, he believes the organization’s culture will continue helping both individual players and the team perform at a high level.
